    General Books
There are a number of compilations which cover the broad range of medieval symbols. Although some focus on symbols in art, they are all helpful to one degree or another. Some limit themselves specifically to the medieval and renaissance periods while others stretch to the modern periodeven including material from eastern cultures. This means, of course, that some of these books need to be used with care to avoid the problem of using a modern or eastern meaning as a basis for an interpretation of a medieval work. Consequently, each annotation delineates carefully the kinds of material covered in each source (plants, animals, colors, stones, etc.) and describes both the specific strengths and limitations for each source. These works are also cross referenced under the specific headings to follow.
    Bibliography
Audsley, W. and G. Handbook of Christian Symbolism.
Although this work focuses specifically on Christian symbols such as the cross, the nimbus, and symbols related to the Passion, Resurrection, and Ascension, it also considers some of the other standard symbols (saints, colors, etc.). While it includes no clear documentation and no index and while it does not specify medieval meanings, it is still a helpful sourceespecially on the biblical topics.

Tulane Architecture Engineering Freeman Business Newcomb College Tulane College University College Dear Prospective Student: As you probably already know, the umbrella term "Classical Studies" includes, in addition to ancient languages (Latin, Greek, and Hebrew), the fields of Greek, Roman, and Near Eastern archaeology, ancient history, ancient religion (Greek, Roman, ancient Judaism, and early Christianity), and ancient culture in general. The programs of study in our department allow our majors both to sample broadly among our offerings and to concentrate in a particular field. Students who major in Classical Studies frequently go on to law school or medical school, and of course some of our majors go on to graduate study in Classics. Many of our students pursue double majors, often in Classical Studies and in the sciences. Many of these students are taking the pre-med curriculum. We are very much aware that the goals of different students require different kinds of preparation, and we work individually with our students to insure that their undergraduate training will give them the best possible foundation for their future professional lives. You will find that the faculty members of Tulane's Department of Classical Studies are nationally and internationally recognized as scholars.

Before students can begin to appreciate and prepare a written analysis any work from the huge body of literature that has been produced in the English language, however, it is helpful to gain a general understanding the history of English language and its development through eight major literary periods over the past 1500 years. More important, perhaps, is the need for students to understand why we read English literature and to explore the meaning of the term "literary masterpiece With that in mind, this research project has been designed to allow students to...

Since Medieval Studies is an interdisciplinary field, tools for bibliographic access are very important. Needless to say, bibliographies specific to fields like literature, history, and art have sections dealing with the medieval topics. The two most comprehensive bibliographies devoted specifically to medieval studies are:
    • International Medieval Bibliography . Leeds: University of Leeds, 1968-. Published twice a year. Arranged by subject (e.g. daily life, economics, social [history]), with author and subject index at the end of each issue. (Lat Xn) Medioevo Latino . Spoleto: Centro di Studi sull' Alto Medioevo, 1980-. Covers 6th through 13 centuries. Arranged alphabetically by medieval authors and texts, then by subjects. At back of each volume are indices of manuscripts, Latin words, places, modern authors. (Lat Xn)
