The Spilman Symposium on Issues in Teaching Writing The Spilman Symposium on Issues in Teaching Writing is a one-day, annual event created to bring teachers of writing together for conversations with some of the major scholars in rhetoric and composition studies. Providing a forum for active engagement of timely issues, the symposium is designed as a think-tank for all faculty who are interested in the teaching of writing, including those involved with writing across the curriculum. Each year registration is limited to approximately eighty participants. The symposium regularly attracts representatives from both two- and four-year institutions in many statesincluding Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Georgia, Ohio, Michigan, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Missouri, and Texasas well as the District of Columbia. Additional Ideas for Teaching Critical Thinking Through Writing Developing Critical Thinking Through Writing: A Brief Explanation When developing the courses that we teach, most of us are concerned with designing a course that will sharpen our students' thinking skills. In part, we accomplish this aim by presenting our students with interesting reading material, lectures, and class discussions. As students read more and hear more, we reason, they will gain knowledge and discover new contexts for their ideas. They will also (we hope) come to think more critically. However, reading assignments and lectures by themselves do not insure that our students will improve their critical thinking skills. Many students read and listen passively, simply absorbing information. They do not reliably challenge the thinking of the writers they are reading or of the professors they are listening to. Nor do they reliably use the material they read to challenge their own ideas. However, when students write, they cannot remain passive players in the learning game. Even the simplest writing task, such as a summary of an article, requires that students make important critical choices: What information is most important to this argument? What might be left out? More complex writing assignments ask students to make more difficult choices about a topic choices that eventually bring them to the questions: "What is it that I think about this subject? How did I arrive at what I think? What are my assumptions, and are they valid? How can I work with facts, observations, inferences, and so on, in order to convince others of what I think?"

Home Search Sitemap Home: ... English The Department of English has a central role in Asbury College’s objective of the integration of faith and learning. Fundamental to the growth of any student is the ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms. Additionally, instructors endeavor to encourage student appreciation for literature as an aesthetic discipline affirming humanity’s quest for increased knowledge of itself and its world. Literature is a witness to the full gamut of human needs, joys, longings, and conflicts and thus serves as a witness to the spiritual dimension within mankind. Concurrently, the Department seeks to assist students in developing a Christian worldview through an integration of historical and Biblical perspectives that, in turn, foster a more cogent articulation of a Christian value system to the modern world. ENGLISH COMPOSITION A. Policy 1. Students must complete ENG 110 or ENG 251 to satisfy the general education requirement in composition. 2. Students are placed in English Composition based upon their ACT/SAT English scores according to the following scale: ACT/SAT ENGLISH SCORE (ENGLISH COMPOSITION PLACEMENT) ACT/SAT English score is 21/500 or less (ENG 100 Introduction to Composition) ACT/SAT English score is 22/510 - 26/650 (ENG 110 Exposition and Research) ACT/SAT English score is 27/660 or higher (ENG 251 Advanced English Composition) 3. Students placed in ENG 100 must complete ENG 100 before enrolling in ENG 110.
