A BEKA readers
Review by Lucia Zilinski
I don't use the Abeka readers for a formal reading program. I use them for supplemental reading. The stories are short enough for children to read and enjoy the stories. Andrea loves picking the readers to just read, and I know she is getting wholesome reading out of them. Christian Liberty Press Readers
Review by Lucia Zilinski
  • IT IS FUN TO READ
  • PALS AND PETS
  • A TIME AT HOME
  • IT IS A JOY TO LEARN
These 4 paperback books put out by Christian Liberty Press have been a joy to my girls while learning to read. Each lesson has a short word list and then a story for them to read. The first book starts out with the short a words, progressing to the other short vowel words and stories to go along. It is fun to see them just pick these books up on their own and see them work on the word list and then read the story. These are great for a child who knows their letters and sounds and are ready to put words together and start reading. Easy Grammar Review by Carole Lacefield We used Easy Grammar 1 this year. (The regular Easy Grammar is advertised for grades 6 and up.) It's unusual in that it teaches prepositions first...you memorize the list of them...and then mark the prepositional phrases off before identifying the other parts of speech. I like it better than the other programs we've tried so far, and are going to use the *Daily Grams* starting next year. *Easy Grammar 1* definitely has enough practice. The other programs I've used didn't have enough practice, and I didn't want to sit there and make up sentences every day.

Program Description Daniel J. Diephouse, Ph.D., department chairperson Courses Information The department of English offers both major and minor concentrations. The English major offers course study in British and American literature, composition, and language that provides a background for graduate study. Both major and minor sequences are designed for future elementary and secondary school teachers. Students should also be aware that an English major or minor can be helpful preparation for other vocations. Business administration majors, pre-medical, pre-seminary, and pre-law students should consider the advantages of the discipline of English for their specializations. Students interested in communications (journalism, public relations, library work, etc.) need a strong background in English. General education requirements in oral communication for the English department are folded into English 201, 211, 272, 274, 276, 303, and 312, all of which have an oral presentation as part of the course. The capstone requirement is met through the development of a portfolio of selections from each major student’s writing in the four years. The field education requirement is met through an internship, either directed teaching with the education department or one worked out by the student with assistance from the student’s advisor. The English major consists of the following (38 hours):
College English: Composition 3 hours College English: Introduction to Literature 3 hours

By  Christian Knoeller Saying and Silence: Listening to Composition with Bakhtin

Written by Frank Farmer,
Utah State University Press
, 2001. $19.95; 148 pages plus appendices. ISBN 0-87421-414-9. In Saying and Silence, Landmark Essays on Bakhtin, Rhetoric and Writing. While some chapters will inevitably speak more directly than others to the interests of individual readers (dealing variously with classroom, academic, and social issues), I believe that each ultimately addresses questions that profoundly affect any of us involved in the teaching of English. What do we mean by “voice” in writing, and how might we guide students to explore it meaningfully when they read and write? How could “imitation” be reconceived in writing instruction by thinking in terms of dialogue? Above all, how can Bakhtin’s theories help us to think in new ways, maybe even more deeply, about how we teach writing? Chapters on voice and imitation are likely to be of particular interest to many writing teachers. Voice is a central concept in Bakhtinian thought, of course, and one that intersects with other definitions of the term, such as those associated with expressivist views. Farmer concludes, “Those who champion rhetoric of expres-sion tend to overlook the crucial roles that other voices play in constructing [one’s voice]”(57). Rather than being primarily per-sonal or unique, then, voice in writing is seen as socially situated.

Some graduate students also work with faculty from the Doctoral Program in Literacy and Schooling, an interdisciplinary program housed in the Department of Education. Composition Studies Core Faculty Cindy Gannett (Ph.D., UNH), Associate Professor of English and Women's Studies, has directed the Writing Across the Curriculum Program at UNH since 1998. Her teaching and scholarly interests include teaching writing, composition theory and practice, literacy studies, the development of journaling and diary traditions, approaches to teaching grammar, writing across the curriculum, and writing centers. She has published Gender and the Journal: Diaries and Academic Discourse (SUNY 1992) and several other articles on the uses of journals in the curriculum and extracurriculum. Most recently she has published a memoir essay, "The Grammar of Memory" (1999) and written on the role of personal narratives in composition and portfolio development across educational levels. Her current projects include an extended study of clinical writing and its pedagogies in the field of communication disorders, and a literacy study of the unpublished Civil War era diaries of Sarah Olevia Haley, a schoolmistress in Lee, New Hampshire.

Problems and Possibilities of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
by Christian Weisser, John Baker, and Janice R. Walker
Abstract
Many universities and libraries throughout the world are now making digitized versions of traditional (print) dissertations available online. Some of these institutions have even gone so far as to completely eliminate printed copies. We propose to discuss what is being done now with electronic theses and dissertations as well as demonstrate the problems and opportunites of authoring theses and dissertations in non-text formats, e.g., hypertext, synchronous and non-synchronous formats, multimedia, etc. As we prepare our students for scholarship in the twenty-first century, it is imperative that we consider how to manage these important new forms of writing.

The purpose of the School of Christian Communications is to train students to be effective communicators, especially of the Word of God. Whether as a minister, Christian educator, Christian musician, or administrator, every student needs to be able to effectively communicate their thoughts and ideas. The School of Christian Communication provides the student the opportunity to learn how to communicate creatively and effectively by means of visual arts, written words, oral communications or music.
Our communications program is founded on a sound education in the Liberal Arts because people working in all areas of communication require a broad understanding of society and the forces that affect it. We feel that communications is an excellent field for those with Christian convictions and moral integrity. Christian media and consulting firms are becoming one of the nations fastest growing fields. Many new opportunities are also opening up in advertisement, marketing, public relations, and association management.
Louisiana Baptist University School of Christian Communications offers Bachelors and Masters degrees with areas of concentration in speech, journalism, media, marketing, management, and music.

About the Composition Discussion Group (CDG)
Founded in the Spring term of 1997, the Composition Discussion Group (CDG) meets about every three weeks to discuss recent readings and issues in composition pedagogy and to provide a forum for instructors of composition to network, share ideas, and discuss each others' work. The mission of the group is to constellate the world of composition outside of Rutgers as a way of understanding the broader context of our working lives. Discussion is led by Richard E. Moving Beyond Academic Discourse Composition Studies and the Public Sphere Christian R. Weisser Foreword by Gary A. Olson March 2002 paper, 0-8093-2416-4, $20.00s 176 pages, 6 x 9 Rhetoric and Composition “Weisser’s book is a model of clarity. . . . and his treatment of the issue of public writing is the most extensive I have read.” —Patricia Bizzell, College of the Holy Cross Moving student writing beyond academic discourse and into larger public spheres is a difficult task, but Christian R. Weisser’s study challenges composition instructors to do just that. This highly accessible book does what no other study has attempted to do: place the most current, cutting-edge theories and pedagogies in rhetoric and composition in their intellectual and historical contexts, while at the same time offering a unique, practical theory and pedagogy of public writing for use both inside and outside of the classroom. By positing a theory of the public for composition studies, one which envisions the public sphere as a highly contested, historically textured, multilayered, and sometimes contradictory site, Weisser offers a new approach to the roles that compositionists might assume in their attempts to initiate progressive political and social change.
