Purpose and Philosophy
The Department of English at ACU offers a Master of Arts degree, with a choice of emphases in either literature or writing. The M.A. English degree prepares one for a variety of options including continued graduate study in literature, teaching, or a career in which written communication is vital. The literature track emphasizes the major literary texts from medieval England to works by contemporary writers from throughout the English-speaking world. Graduate students in English at ACU can expect to become acquainted with major theoretical approaches to literary texts. Students will receive a grounding in theory and will be encouraged to practice a variety of interpretive approaches. Students will also be expected to know the leading concerns in contemporary literary scholarship. The writing track is especially intended for those planning careers in writing or in the teaching of writing. This track is also appropriate to non-traditional students who wish to develop their creative writing skills. The English department is committed to mentoring students both inside and outside the classroom. An especially prominent element of the ACU graduate English program is the opportunity to participate in a unique spiritual and intellectual community, both informal and formal. Students enjoy a number of informal opportunities to meet, discuss, and share ideas.

Teaching Writing: Structure and Style
by Andrew Pudewa Review by Martha Robinson Teaching Writing: Structure and Style , by Andrew Pudewa of The Institute for Excellence in Writing, $130 for complete set, order from http://www.writing-edu.com Teaching Writing: Structure and Style , consisting of seven videotapes and a notebook, is a "how to teach composition" program for parents of children in grades two to eleven. Andrew Pudewa of The Institute for Excellence in Writing teaches writing workshops throughout the country, and this program is a videotape of his two day seminar for parents and teachers. All of Mr. Pudewa’s programs, popularly referred to as simply "IEW," are based on Mrs. Anna Ingham’s "Blended Sound-Sight Program" and James B. Webster’s book, Blended Structure and Style in Composition Teaching Writing: Structure and Style has the goal of making all children into effective writers by helping the parent to stretch out the writing of the reluctant child, while paring down and focusing the writing of the verbose child. The heart of Teaching Writing: Structure and Style is the modeling technique. Students begin by learning to take notes and to make a key word outline from a short selection. They then narrate and write the story from their notes to create a composition in their own words. Suggested adjustments to tailor the class to younger or older students are included in the notebook.

Testing/Composition Evaluation Services
To help you in the critical task of selecting appropriate materials for your child, Christian Liberty Academy has developed several specialized services for homeschoolers. We can test your child, provide a customized curriculum recommendation that is suited for your child’s skill level, and critique your child’s writing ability. It is our desire to assist you in any way we can as you train your child in the way he should go.
Independent Achievement Testing Service
Many home educators would like to use achievement tests to evaluate their children’s progress without the need for someone else to administer the tests. To aid such families, Christian Liberty Academy has developed its own testing service for grades two through twelve. We provide testing in the basic skills with the nationally-recognized California Achievement Test (1970 edition). This test will give you an accurate assessment of your children’s abilities and aid you in selecting appropriate school materials.

WIN Writing Program "I’ve been really impressed with Dr. Les Simonson and Peter Joel’s approach to teaching young people how to write. I started using the program when I was ten and have since written many short stories and two novels. Plus, my sisters and I have been publishing our own magazine. The books are clearly written taking the "whole concept" approach. Each "part" of a story is taught and then the student is taught step-by-step how to build a story. They are easy enough so that even the most reluctant writer is not frustrated, but encouraged!" - Laura Elizabeth Bunch (At age 19) WIN Level A: Dictation Book This little book is for the non-writer (preschool-1st grade) and is used by the parent to transcribe stories that the child narrates. In the process of telling the story, the child learns fundamentals of story construction (the setting, main characters and events, etc.). The finished product is a small booklet the child illustrates. WWLA - WIN Level B (Grades 2-4) A neat little workbook designed to introduce beginning writers to four major story parts (Setting, Problem, Solving the Problem, and Conclusion) and to get them to write short, simple stories of seven sentences or more. Intended for 2nd-4th grades, this is the best introduction to story writing we've ever seen. It will take your child less than a month to work through, but lays foundational concepts for further story writing.
