Travel Chinese Philosophies and religions Summary Summary Fact Sheet Graphics Chinese is greatly influenced by the philosophies and religions of Confucianism Taoism and Buddhism . Without a better understanding, it may be difficult to distinguish between philosophies, religions or superstitions in some cases. The history in this area has attracted many attentions and may help to understand this nation better. Chinese philosophies tend to lead people to live in harmony. Western thinking may lead to the same destination but through confrontation and violence. Taoism and Confucianism were created in the early year of Chinese history between 600 BC and 400 BC. Based on the work of Dao De Jin, Taoism promotes the belief that a person will gain power and strength if behave in harmony with the nature of universe. A person will be prosecuted sooner or later by his own wrong doing if acts against the nature of the universe. With proper behaviors and self restrain, a person can achieve great inner strength and prolonged life. Taoism and Buddhism are the most popular religions in China. They may be different but they have no conflicts.

Just as the boatman sits in his small boat, trusting his frail craft in a stormy sea that is boundless in every direction, rising and falling with the howling, mountainous waves, so in the midst of a world full of suffering and misery the individual man calmly sits, supported by and trusting the principium individuationis , or the way in which the individual knows things as phenomena. Institute of Chinese Literature and Philosophy, Preparatory Office
The Preparatory Office of the Institute of Chinese Literature and Philosophy is situated by the side of the Ssu-fen brook in Academia Sinica. At present it has 17 research fellows and more than one hundred and twenty thousand holdings in its library collection. We aim to advance the study of Chinese literature and philosophy, and to lay the groundwork for the establishment of the Institute. We recruit researchers that specialize in the following five fields: classical Chinese literature, modern Chinese literature, Confucian classics, Chinese philosophy, and comparative philosophy. It also sponsors collaborative research projects and provides a forum of intellectual exchange for scholars in Taiwan and abroad. The establishment of this office began in 1988, when Dr. Ting Pang-hsin and 15 other members of Academia Sinica proposed to set up the Institute of Chinese Literature and Philosophy. As the proposal was well received, Professor Wu Hung-i of National Taiwan University was invited both to chair the Advisory Committee and to head the Preparatory Office in the fall of 1989. The office began to operate in March 1990. In July 1992, Professor Wu resigned from both posts for health reasons. Dr. Ting Pang-hsin chaired the Advisory Committee from 1992 to 1995; Professor Tu Wei-ming was later appointed the new chairman of the Committee. Professor Tai Lian-chang, a member of the Advisory Committee since 1989, assumed the directorship of the Preparatory Office in 1992. He has headed the Office ever since.

The essays at this site range from the fully annotated and technical to more informal and discursive discussions, often written for undergraduate classes. Many items therefore should be intelligible to those not familiar with all the arcana of academic philosophy. Such a range of submissions is acceptable and desired, since the trend, by which academic philosophy has obscured and esotericized itself, and mostly dropped out of popular and literate culture, should be resisted.

What Did Confucius Say?
If power, prestige, and wealth were taken as the standards of achievement, Confucius would hardly be considered to have been a success in his own lifetime. K'ung Ch'iu, or Master Kung, the man who later became known in the West by the Latinized name of Confucius, was born in the state of Lu in northeastern China about the middle of the sixth century B.C. This was a period when China was divided into several feudal kingdoms. During the Han dynasty (206 B.C.-220 A.D.), Confucius came to be recognized as a great teacher. In time his teachings became the basis of the Chinese educational system, which in turn was used to select government officials throughout much of Chinese history down to the twentieth century. Equally important, the ideas of Confucius and his followers penetrated to the very core of the lives of ordinary Chinese people. These ideas became the guiding principles of Chinese life. They gave structure and focus to the Chinese sense of what it means to be human. When we want to know what Confucius said, we turn to a small book that records some of the conversations he had with his students and their accounts of his actions of particular occasions. The Chinese name for this book is the

-P HILOSOPHY AND R ELIGION Across history, Chinese philosophy and religion has influenced the growth of the Chinese people as a civilization. The very culture takes from the writings of Confucius, Mencius and Buddha. Nearly two thirds of the population looks to one of these in everyday life decisions for guidance. The teachings of Feng Shui dictate the layout and design of every major city in China and the surrounding area. Much of what is taught today as philosophy around the world comes from 2500 year old manuscripts written in Chinese and translated into every major language. More than a quarter of the earth's population practices Buddhism as its major religion. In the sections below, much of what is regarded as the basis for these philosophies and religions will be discussed. Philosophy Section a01- Introduction

Exploring how ideas about human nature have shaped practices of social control and education in Chinese history, this volume explores how the most striking political concepts and policies of the contemporary period rest on distinctly Chinese theories of mind. Many of these contrast dramatically with long-held Western beliefs, key among them the insistence on the comingling of rational thought with the emotions and motives. Focusing on the Maoist period (1940s through 1976), Munro reveals convergence between Confucian and Maoist theories of mind, and considers their application in both education and the practice of modern government.
