NCTAN IMPLEMENTATION PLAN
Chinese Cultural Identity

Orange High School
Objectives: * Students will be able to explain how a region's culture often reflects the response of the people of that region to their physical surroundings. * Students will be able to show how landforms and distance limited Chinese contacts with the cultures of Africa, Southwest Asia and South Asia. * Students will be able to explain why the Chinese cultural sphere extended rather to the south and east, encompassing the present-day countries of Japan, North and South Korea and Vietnam. * Students will be able to list and explain the elements of Chinese culture, including the writing system and Confucian philosophy, which dominated in this sphere. Overview: China has had a traditional self-image as a cultural center of the world-the "Middle Kingdom". The circumstances that may have created this idea will be the focus of this plan. The Chinese believed that outsiders could join their culture or become assimilated into it. This belief in a "universalistic" culture has been an important factor in maintaining national unity among the many and diverse regions of China. * Day 1: All students will have read Chapter 1 (East Asia: Common Ground and Regional Differences) and Chapter 2 (Prehistory, Beginnings in China, and the Shang Dynasty) of East Asia A New History by Rhoads Murphey.

This classified bibliography represents an effort to catalog and classify reference works on Chinese historical geography (which traditionally overlapped with geology). On the right hand side you see an overview over the employed (self-made) classification. Click on any link and a list of titles will appear given detailed information an each item. Note that the contents of some of the 13 "classes" employed here like MAPS and CARTOGRAPHY overlap. The format of the bibliographical entries is of my own making and may be subjected to (formal or cosmetic) changes.
If you know of any item that should go into this bibliography, please let me know. BTW: Chinese coding differs from the coding used in my photo-bibliography; please set your browser or CJK enhancement software to Big-5.

  • Course Description The Course This module is an introduction to Chinese culture. The approach will be one which sees culture as the system of shared ideas and meanings, explicit and implicit, which a people use to interpret the world and which serve to pattern their behavior [Patricia Ebrey]. This concept of culture includes an understanding of the art, literature, and history of a society, but also less tangible aspects such as attitudes, prejudices, folklore and so forth. With China we will find a tradition of civilization marked for over 3000 years by the use of writing, urbanization, a developed artistic culture, social stratification

Chinese Geography - I, II, III, IV, V ... Original Picture from National Geographic Society China is one of the biggest countries in the world. It has an area of about 9.6 million square kilometers which comprises about 6.5 per cent of the world total land area. Its population of more than one billion accounts for 23 per cent of the world's population. China is the world's oldest continuous civilization. World Travel Organization predicts that by year 2020, China will become the number one travel destination in the world. China is situated in the eastern part of Asia on the west coast of the Pacific Ocean. It is the third largest country in the world (after Canada and Russia). The distance from east to west measures over 5,200 kilometers and from north to south, over 5,500 kilometers. Chinese Geography - I, II, III, IV, V Huang He (Yellow River) China's second longest river, Yellow River rises in Qinghai province and flows some 5,464 km to the Yellow Sea. Crystal clear lakes and lazy meandering are characteristic in its upper reaches. Along the Great Bend of the Yellow River in its middle course, the unruly river carves its way through the loessial plateau with substantial erosion taking place. As the river erodes the loess, it becomes a "river of mud", causing serious flooding almost every year. What was once a scourge that plagued the Chinese people throughout much of their history continues to be one of China's great natural challenges preventing both flooding and drought in a region with more than 100 million people. Siltation at the mouth of the Yellow River extended the length of the river by approximately 35 km (20 miles) between 1975 and 1991. Geography People History Art ...
