vanessa.winchester@geog.ox.ac.uk Dr. Vanessa Winchester is a research associate in the Geomorphology research group in the School.
Research Interests
Summary
- Lichenometric and dendrochronological techniques, climatic and environmental changes.
Dr. Winchester's research interests include the application of lichenometric and dendrochronological techniques to the dating and interpretation of environmental changes. Her recent work has included studies of: the frequency of recent glacier movements, outburst floods and debris flows in southern Chile and Kazakhstan. On-going research in Chile is focused on analysis of landscape processes and climatic change around the North Patagonian Icefield, an area that is ideally placed for Southern Hemisphere climate studies, but whose geomorphology is little known. Using dendrochronology and lichenometry Dr. Winchester's main aim in Kazakhstan is to link catastrophic debris flows in the northern Tien Shan Mountains to climate changes that have been in progress there since the mid-nineteenth century. Forthcoming Publications Geomorphology , (accepted for publication).

Reading List Geography Central Chile is the cultural nucleus of the country. All of Chile's largest cities are located here, as are most of its universities and industries, its vineyards, finest agricultural lands, colonial and early republican architecture. In fact, central Chile is something of a microcosm of the country, balanced between deserts to the north and forests to the south, with the capital poised between the highest peaks in the Americas and a host of premier beach resorts. Santiago, the capital, is a focal point of Latin American commerce and the point of entry for nearly all international arrivals. Clean and modern, Santiago sits in a basin between the Coast Range to the west and the Andes to the east. World-class ski areas in the central Andes lie only forty-five minutes away, up steep switchbacks which climb over 7,500 feet in twenty-six miles. Numerous vineyards surround the capital; hotsprings, seventeenth-century colonial haciendas, and national parks in both the Andes and the Coast Range, all make easy day trips. At night, visitors may choose from a variety of restaurants serving all types of regional and ethnic cuisines, and excellent hotels assure a good night's sleep for business or pleasure.

    http://www.chiptravel.cl/chile101/geograph.htm
Chilli, in the language of the indigenous peoples, means "where the world ends." You can understand where they got this notion from when you consider that the country stretches to the southernmost point of any land mass in the world apart from Antarctica, to a latitude of 56 degrees south. To give you an idea of how far south this is, consider that South Africa is located at about 35 degrees south and mainland Australia is around 39 degrees south! However, the string bean geography of Chile also stretches far northward. The distance between Arica, the northernmost city, and Puerto Williams, the southernmost town in the country and the world, is about 4,000 kilometers. This distance is equal to the span between Madrid and Moscow, or San Francisco and New York. On its western border, the Pacific Ocean washes up against Chile's long and rambling coastline, providing for a rich diversity of marine life. The cool Humboldt current that brings water from Antarctica is felt along the entire coast, with the water temperature decreasing significantly as one moves south. At certain points along the coast, the ocean is more than 8,000 meters deep. The Andes mountain range is the backbone of the country as well as the continent of South America. The soaring peaks catch the moisture laden clouds that blow across from the Pacific, causing the precipitation that feeds the rivers cascading down from its snow-capped heights. These rivers not only irrigate the land on their way back to the ocean, but also provide Chile with its main source of electricity. In the north, the rugged peaks reach altitudes well over 6,000 meters, including the famous Ojos Del Salado, the highest volcano in the world at 6908 meters. The Andes diminish in size as one heads south, becoming a string of snow-capped volcanoes and rugged faces reaching skyward from plush temperate rainforests. The range then disappears in the deep south and runs along the ocean floor before reemerging in Antarctica.
