    GEOGRAPHY: Natural Regions
Chile consists of three distinct longitudinal structural regions -the Andes, the coastal range and the central Valley- and a series of latitudinal ald altitudinal climatic regions.
    The Andes
The Andes (Cordillera) run along the entire lenght of the eastern part of the country. The watershed between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, which follows the central and often highest ridges of the Andes, was adopted (by agreement with Argentina) as Chile's eastern boundary. In the north, approximately to latitude 27 grades, the Andes consists of two or more almost parallel ranges. The Chilean Andes are highest and most rugged and precipitous in the northern and central parts of the country, with peaks above 6,000 meters (20,000 feet). South America's highest peak, Aconcagua (22,834 feet), rises just east of Chile's border. Mountain passes in this part of the Andes are few and difficult, rising above 10,000 feet. South of Santiago the Andes become gradually lower, with peaks of aproximately 12,00 feet. Passes are much lower and easier to negotiate. In the extreme south, the Andes are fragmented by deep, latitudinal valleys (of glacial origin) deep ocean inlets and channels. The mountains extend trough the island of Tierra del Fuego to the southern end of the continent. Near the Chilean Andes and along their western flank is one of the world's densest concentrations of volcanoes, both extinct and active. There are over 2,000, including 48 that have erupted at least once within the last 100 years. The abundance of volcanic features in Chile and its vicinity is also reflected in the frequent sismic events and conspicous evidence of recent tectonic movements.

    BACK TO THE FRONT PAGE
BASIC INFO. GEOGRAPHY GOVERNMENT ... PEOPLE Color CHILE On a map, Chile looks like a long ribbon reaching from the middle of South America's west coast straight down to the southern tip of the continent, where it curves slightly eastward. Cape Horn, the southernmost point in the Americas, where the Pacific and Atlantic oceans turbulently meet, is Chilean territory. Chile's northern neighbors are Peru and Bolivia, and its border with Argentina to the east, at 5,150 kilometers.
Chile's shape was determined by the fact that it began as a Spanish settlement on the western side of the mighty cordillera of the Andes, in the central part of the country. This range, which includes the two tallest peaks in the AmericasAconcagua (6,959 meters) and Nevado Ojos del Salado (6,880 meters)is a formidable barrier, whose passes to the Argentine side are covered by a heavy blanket of snow during the winter months. As a result, Chile could expand beyond its original colonial territory only to the south and north. The colony grew southward by occupying lands populated by indigenous groups, and it grew northward by occupying sections of both Peru and Bolivia that were eventually awarded to Chile in the aftermath of the War of the Pacific (1879-83).
The northern two-thirds of Chile lie on top of the telluric Nazca Plate, which, moving eastward about ten centimeters a year, is forcing its way under the continental plate of South America. This movement has resulted in the formation of the Peru-Chile Trench, which lies beyond a narrow band of coastal waters off the northern two-thirds of the country. The trench is about 150 kilometers wide and averages about 5,000 meters in depth. At its deepest point, just north of the port of Antofagasta, it plunges to 8,066 meters. Although the ocean's surface obscures this fact, most of Chile lies at the edge of a profound precipice.

    INTRODUCTION
Background: A three-year-old Marxist government was overthrown in 1973 by a dictatorial military regime led by Augusto PINOCHET, which ruled until a freely elected president was installed in 1990. Sound economic policies, first implemented by the PINOCHET dictatorship, led to unprecedented growth in 1991-97 and have helped secure the country's commitment to democratic and representative government. Growth slowed in 1998-99, but will likely recover in 2000.

Few countries can boast such a wide range of natural wonders, nor such a difficultto-administergeography. Chile borders Peru and Bolivia to the north

T his land is such that to live out one's life there is none better in the world. I say this because it is very flat, extremely healthy, and abundant. There are just four months of winter, with only a day or two of rain; the remaining days are so beautifully sunny that there is no reason to warm yourself by a fire. The summer is so temperate and has such breezes that a man could walk all day in the sun, with no concerns. Letter from conquistador Pedro de Valdivia to Carlos V, the most powerful king of Europe, the sun never sets on his kingdom The country has a surface area of approximately 288,252 square miles, about twice the size of Japan and larger than many European nations, including France, Spain and Sweden. The maritime limits of Chile extend 12 miles from the coast, plus an economic zone up to 200 miles off the America and Antarctic coasts. Those 200 miles include marine resources, plus the ocean floor and subfloor. The sea surface is approximately 1.4 million square miles. Chilean culture and society was strongly informed by waves of immigration, in part from European countries such as Germany, Yugoslavia, Italy and England, beginning in 19th century and continuing into the next. As the Chilean economy has grown, Canadian, Scandanavian, Japanese, Korean and U.S. immigrants have begun to impact the social structures of the country. Chile was founded February 12, 1541 by the Spanish explorer Pedro de Valdivia. The Spanish ruled for 270 years until a new class of Chilean-born settlers began to consider themselves the rightful rulers of the land. Bolstered by democratic movements in France and the United States, Chile declared independence on September 18, 1810.
