Home DCFS Library Back Forward Child Care Choices from the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services INTRODUCTION Finding child care should be easy you want someone who will love and nurture your child. Often, however, the search becomes confusing and difficult. Child care is available in many different settings. Selecting the right fit for you and your child is important There are many things to think about and many questions to ask. Like you, most mothers and fathers need some form of child care. More than half of Illinois children under the age of six live in homes where all parents are in the workforce. The Department of Children and Family Services is the child care licensing and monitoring agency for the state of Illinois. Quality of child care is our utmost concern. CHOICES AND STANDARDS Child Care Choices One of the first child care decisions you'll have to make is what kind of care is best for you and your child. There are three basic choices: care in your own home by a relative or non-relative; care in a provider's home; or care in a center. One choice isn't better than the others, just different. The Department sets standards for most care in a provider's home and care in a center. Though care in your own home is not regulated by the Department, it works well for many families.
