Welcome! You are at the Home Page of the Latinamerican Chemistry Net, sponsored by the Organization of the American States , through the Mexican National Council for Science and Technology ( CONACyT ) and the Mexican Academy of Science ( AMC ). It is hosted by the Chemistry Department at the Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute ( CINVESTAV ), and coordinated by Dr. Eusebio Juaristi
We are grateful for support from UNESCO - Montevideo
We are still at an early stage of construction of this server but we are aiming at offering a useful interface to the internet, so that you can easily find useful information and other services on line. We are also developing a yellow pages service of latinamerican chemistry institutions and personnel, both academic and non academic, to promote communication and collaboration among us. The OAS Inter-American Council for Integral Development (CIDI), approved significant funds for a national project for Costa Rica, within the framework of RedHUCyT. The project involved the purchase of a ground station for satellite communications. The antenna strengthens the Internet access of the country's academic and government sectors and facilitates the interconnection of more institutions through the Costa Rican Academic Network ( CRNet ). The antenna was inaugurated by the President of Costa Rica and the OAS Secretary General in April 1997. Also, the project complements the interconnection of other Central American academic networks, by using the current communications infrastructure and equipment donated within the different OAS/RedHUCyT regional projects. For the implementation of this Central American Backbone , the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE) approved a non-refundable loan to the Costa Rican government. Within this context, Costa Rica and Nicaragua established a digital link in November 1996 and, in the following months, other Central American countries will interconnect to the backbone. The OAS/RedHUCyT will support the connection of Panama to this regional backbone.

    Introduction
This directory provides information about library and information studies programs that are accredited by the American Library Association (ALA). Each program's listing includes contact names, an address, phone and fax numbers, an e-mail address, degrees and certificates offered, and distance education opportunities. If you have any questions about a program, please contact the school directly. ALA accredits master's programs in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. Although this directory emphasizes the ALA-accredited master's programs, it also includes the names of other degrees offered by the schools (e.g., post-master's certificate or doctoral degree). Programs are listed alphabetically by the state or province in which the primary campus is located. There is an index by institution at the end of the directory. The directory also lists LIS distance education offerings available at each school. Distance education may be through traditional extension programs with faculty on-site or through interactive video, the Internet, or other technologies. Prospective students should verify with a school the extent to which a full master's program can be completed off-site. Distance education offerings change frequently, so prospective students should inquire with the school for the most current information.

These projects are administered from IWMI's main offices in Sri Lanka, Thailand, Pakistan, India and South Africa and associated sub-regional offices in Ghana, Uzbekistan, Nepal, Laos and China. IWMI has chosen five research themes as its key instruments to address the need for strategic priority setting in the institute and to assure thematic integration of research agendas across physical locations. The five themes are: Integrated Water Resource Management for Agriculture; Sustainable Smallholder Land and Water Management Systems; Sustainable Groundwater Management; Water Resource Institutions and Policies; and Water, Health and Environment. The place within the organization
The person selected will be based at the IWMI Regional Office for Southeast Asia located at Bangkok, Thailand, but may be called upon to work across other regions such as south, central and western Asia, China, and sub-Saharan Africa. The work will be primarily associated with IWMI's research on Water, Health and the Environment, but collaboration with other themes will be required.

    http://www.asee.org/prism/december/html/december_briefings.htm
    Harris Poll: What's an Engineer?
What do most Americans know about engineering? Not much, according to a recent Harris Poll conducted for the American Association of Engineering Societies (AAES). Respondents said they know more about science, and are more likely to associate invention and discovery with scientists than with engineers. AAES helped develop the poll, titled "American Perspectives on Engineers and Engineering," after a June Harris Poll measuring the prestige of various professions showed that engineers have "consistent but mediocre prestige" in the eyes of the general public. (Medicine was most often identified as a profession of "very great" prestige, while journalism and union leadership held the bottom positions of the 17 professions included in the poll.) In particular, the AAES poll was designed to probe the reasons that scientists rank so much higher than engineers, says Martha Sloan, chair of AAES and an electrical engineering professor at Michigan Technological University. "What struck me was the degree to which people understand what scientists and technicians do, but not engineers," Sloan says. Scientists are five times more likely to be thought of as inventors, and seven times more likely to be credited with protecting the environment than are engineers, according to the poll. "Clearly, something is wrong out there that we need to fix," she says.

Survey Cites Need for Strengthened Research in Natural Sciences at Undergraduate Universities

    Professor Michael Doyle
Educators nationwide agree that for colleges and universities, one measure of academic excellence is how active undergraduate students are in research. But there's no clear consensus in some undergraduate institutions about what "research" means or if research with undergraduates is publishable, according to a comprehensive study of predominantly undergraduate U.S. colleges and universities over the past decade, 1990 – 2000. And, contrary to statements posited 20 years ago, the new study revealed that the federal government provides the bulk of undergraduate research support at public and private undergraduate institutions. The institutions themselves provide facilities and faculty salaries. Growing concern that fewer U.S. students in the natural sciences are heading to graduate school prompted five foundations to survey 136 baccalaureate-degree-granting institutions across the nation, said Research Corp. President Michael Doyle, a professor of chemistry at the University of Arizona.
