Links for Chemists was "born" in June 1995, early versions were merely upgraded or deleted, however an antiquated, unauthorised copy was located on a server in Germany. We have made it available here to demonstrate how far the index has developed in the last few years. In the first few months of the site, the visitors numbered in the low hundreds, by January of 1999, we had broken through the barrier of 10,000 front page visitors per month February 2000 saw 20,000+ unique visitors and by March 2000, this had reached 23,500 unique visitors in one month, or 34,400 including repeat visits. Some of the major landmarks in the site's development are listed below, or you can click here to jump to the latest additions. Presidential Research Professors The NIU Presidential Research Professorships were established in spring 1982 in recognition and support of the research and artistic mission of the university. Recipients of this award are selected on the basis on significant and sustained scholarly or creative work, including the achievement of national or international reputation in their individual fields. Up to three such professorships are granted each year, providing budgetary support and released time for research or artistic activities. After four years as a Presidential Research Professor, each of these eminent faculty members is designated a Distinguished Research Professor.

John H. Sinfelt Perkin Medallist 1984 Born 1931 February 18 When we go to the gas pumps today, we have a choice: regular, premium, or Ultra. We all know that the highest-octane gasoline makes our vehicles run most efficiently, but what makes the gasolines different and how are they produced? And what happened to all of the lead that used to be in our tanks and the large amounts of carbon monoxide and other pollutants that were present in our fumes? These are questions that can be answered by John Sinfelt, the inventor of a highly active catalyst ; the platinum-iridium catalyst used in the production of gasoline and petrochemicals -the innovation for which he was awarded the prestigious Perkin Medal. As a boy growing up in Munson, Pennsylvania, during the Great Depression, Sinfelt attended a two-room schoolhouse for the first eight years of his education. In his Oral History, Dr. Sinfelt says that during those eight years he was taught by two teachers. He ranked them "with the best teachers [he] ever had anywhere." When Sinfelt was still in grade school, his father would come home from working in the bituminous coal mines all day and teach him algebra. Even though Dr. Sinfelt's parents never went to college, he notes that it was clear they valued a college education for their children. After graduating from high school, Sinfelt went on to Penn State University , where he majored in chemistry and chemical engineering. He did his graduate work on an assistantship at the
