    Philosophy and Overview
We are pleased that you have chosen to use "Ozone Does it Affect Me" in your classroom. The Chemistry activities were developed to be used with typical high school chemistry curricula. The Chemistry activities, therefore, are geared toward the 10th or 11th grade student. The Environmental Science activities are geared toward the 9th or 10th grade student. We hope these activities will give you new and exciting ways to teach some of the key concepts presented in typical Chemistry and Environmental Science courses.
    The Learning Cycle
Each unit has been structured according to a learning cycle model. The basic components of the learning cycle are as follows: Engage: Create interest, generate curiosity, and identify students' preconceived notions.
Explore: Provide opportunity to observe and test ideas.
    Explain: Present definitions and concepts.
Elaborate: Students apply ideas to a new situation.
Evaluate: Assess student knowledge and skills. Each activity is designed to highlight one, or more, stages of the learning cycle. For a listing of activities by learning cycle stage, please refer to the section titled, "Unit Outline According to the Learning Cycle, Science Concepts and Science Skills".

Fun with Chemistry: A Guidebook of K-12 Activities. Vol. 1.
Compiled and edited by Mickey Sarquis and Jerry Sarquis. Madison, Wis.: Institute for Chemical Education, University of Wisconsin, 1991. Recommended grade level:
This first volume of Fun with Chemistry includes 53 chemistry activities and demonstrations. The activities in the first part of the book are arranged in sections on carbon dioxide, chemistry with foodstuffs, color changes, density, and "from the five and dime." Among these activities, students observe that carbon dioxide extinguishes the flame from a candle, compare the dissolving rate of sugar cubes with that of powdered sugar, experiment with density columns, and boil water in a paper pot. Fun with Chemistry take fewer than 15 minutes to set up. Activities have a grade-level recommendation, instructions for doing the activity, safety and disposal guidelines, extensions or variations, curriculum integration ideas, and an explanation of the chemical concepts involved. The volume also provides a list of suppliers; a list of readily available, inexpensive chemicals (such as common household chemicals); and an activity index sorted by key concepts. Prices: $23 ($45 for volumes 1 and 2).

"Hi - here are the details of a two day event we did at our primary school class of year 3 and 4 children during Chemistry Week.
We split the children into four groups and they investigated four different aspects of chemistry. We made slime from borax and pva glue. (We got so good at it we thought of selling it as stocking fillers at the school fair).
We used a cabbage indicator to test acids and alkalines, (one child referred to it as 'toxic cabbage water'. ) We made bread, children didn't realise that cooking was in fact chemistry.
And we made a variety of bubble blowers (with good results including cubed bubbles and very large bubbles) and experimented with washing up liquid and glycerine to get the best bubble mixture.
The children and staff had a great couple of days, they learned a lot and are still talking about it. Exciting science can be done at primary schools, (and by non specialists, I'm one of them)."

    Introduction
Chemistry has always used quantitative experimentation to teach concepts in a hands on lab environment. However Coach probeware will let you illustrate chemistry concepts in ways that you never thought possible before. Coach makes this experience a safer one for your students. Whether you are working with the titration apparatus to speed up and improve titrations in your chemistry lab, or using Coach's predict feature to put the hypothesis back into your activities coach is the probeware choice for Chemistry teachers. On this page you will find information about using CoachLab software and hardware (as well as TI-CBL) in Chemistry.
Benefits of Coach Probeware for Chemistry Teachers
    • Coach's titration apparatus makes titrations quick, safe, and effective every time. Coach can record data from up to six sensors at a time. Coach can plot data from one sensor verses another sensor so experiments like temperature vs. pressure are possible.

Mass Academy Chemistry, Physics, Engineering and Their Activities
Hi, I am Jacklyn Bonneau, a teacher at Massachusetts Academy for Mathematics and Science at Worcester, Massachusetts . At Mass Academy, I teach Chemistry, Integrated Chemistry and Physics (ICP), Research Seminar, and Engineering as part of out Technology program.
The academy is a school for students accelerated in mathematics and science as juniors and seniors. It is an exam school which is free to the students and considered a public school. We are located on the campus of Worcester Polytechnic Institute . Our philosophy includes an active learning environment where students explore many topics in an interdisciplinary way. Please walk through some of the activities below and let us know what you think. I am currently working to construct student pages, faculty support pages will be following. At the academy, any student who has not had Chemistry in their sending school takes a semester of Chemistry as a mandatory elective. As an elective it is an "extra" academic class which contains a laboratory component and many home activities and labs. Below you will find many such activities for your use. Explorations in Physics is taken by all juniors at the academy. We do a variety of activities, most of which are hands-on and open ended. A sampling of some of those which I have worked to create is listed below.

Course Description This course is designed to help educators understand how technology can strengthen science learning. It is geared toward the use of the Internet and Internet delivered simulations. This program will create proficient and avid users of Internet based science simulations and provide them with the tools and techniques necessary to successfully apply new methods in teaching science.
Through this course educators will learn how to implement technology, through LOGAL simulations, into the science curriculum. Two kinds of simulations will be used:
    • Simulations based on mathematical modeling: Introductory level activities (Science Gateways) and advanced placement activities (Science Explorer) in biology, physiology, chemistry and physics will be examined. Simulations based on real-time or historical data available on the Web: The course will help educators and students visualize and analyze available "Internet" data.

    Chemistry for all ages...
We all benefit from better science education. Today's students are tomorrow's leaders, voters, and employees. Miami University's Center for Chemistry Education (CCE) brings chemistry and the companion sciences to life for teachers and students at all levels. Through programs begun in the mid-1980s, CCE fosters quality hands-on, minds-on chemical education that encourages teachers and students to work together to solve scientific challenges, think critically, and use their powers of observation. The Center for Chemistry Education, through its ever-expanding nationwide network of educators and private-sector partners, has already reached about 12,500 teachers who teach more than 1 million students each year. The Center is housed on the Miami University's Middletown, OH, campus. (Click here for directions.) The following success stories are brought to you by the Center for Chemistry Education and dedicated educators and chemists across the country. If you want to see how the Center develops these successes, click here to take a look at the myriad CCE initiatives.
