Web publishing tips - Free Web Sites
Don't have a domain address yet. Want to try to build a site for fun and practice without any expense? There are literally hundreds of sites that allow you to build a home page or a whole site for no charge. You won't necessarily have your own domain name (www.yourname.com or .cc) but you can have a presence on the Internet and gather some worthwhile experience. There are many new sites that offer up to 20megs of space on their server and you may be able to get your name listed first on their domain. Along with the site many offer email forwarding, quick setups, opportunities to use publishing software like MS FrontPage. Examples of a few of these sites: www.00server.com

Quick Start If your WELL account includes Web page publishing, setting it up to serve Web pages involves three basic steps. If you are already familiar with telnet and FTP you can get up and running with the Quick Start section, otherwise skip down to the next section.
  • Telnet to host well.com, log in, and type !makeweb at the OK prompt to create a WEB directory in your WELL home directory. This only needs to be done once.
  • FTP your html and image files to the WEB directory you just created.
  • Set your file permissions by typing !websecurity at your WELL OK prompt. Permissions must be set each time you upload a new file to your WEB directory.
Publishing Your Web Page on the WELL When you publish your Web page on the WELL your URL or Web address will be:
http://www.well.com/user/username To get started you will need to telnet to your WELL account in order to prepare it for serving out Web pages. Open your telnet program and connect to host "well.com" using a terminal type of vt100. After you have connected to the WELL and logged in you will need to type !makeweb at your OK prompt. This creates a directory in your WELL home directory named "WEB". This procedure only needs to be done once in order to set your account up. You can now start transferring your prepared html files to this directory.

Section 1. General Understandings Because of the growing prominence of the World Wide Web as a means of information dissemination and communication, university Web authors should pay close attention to and take responsibility for the information placed on their sites. The Web fosters rapid creation and dissemination of information without close supervision. Before launching a site, users should take into consideration how other university policies and guidelines may apply to content within the Web environment. Policies specific to Web publishing are listed below, whereas, policies governing all computing at USC should be reviewed online ( http://www.usc.edu/isd/policies University Web sites include those sponsored and maintained by academic and administrative units; student, faculty, or staff organizations; or their appointed designates. Each university Web site must provide an effective feedback mechanism (e.g., email or Web form) allowing visitors to communicate with the group responsible for the site. Such feedback mechanisms must be monitored regularly, and a site representative should either issue a response or route messages to an appropriate party in a timely manner. As with other forms of information and communication, appropriate university officials are accountable for Web sites in their area of responsibility. Advertising by external agencies is not permitted on university Web pages, except as noted below. University Web pages cannot be used to promote or execute commercial or for-profit endeavors.

My Counter I wrote this counter in perl. The images used can be easily made yourself, or you can search the internet for a set. www.digitmania.com used to be the best, but I'm not sure what happened to it. Now, I suggest searching in a search engine. Like this . For the code to work you need 10 seperate images named 0.gif to 9.gif. The counter uses a graphic engine to load the images and return them. You can read the documentation and download this engine at the GD Graphics Library . The version of the GD engine I used supported gif images, and that's what I used in this example. But the current version no longer supports gifs because of problems with licensing, so you'll have to use jpgs or pngs instead, which will involve a little modifying of my code. You can see the code here . You'll have to change the extension of the file to whatever your server supports, like .pl or .cgi. Trackers The above counter can easily be extended to tracking information from the accessing user. You just have to decide which information you want to track, come up with a way to get that information (if there is one), and come up with a method of storing the information. I did this and wrote a tracker program which had most of the stuff found in other trackers out there. But I wrote this tracker at my previous job at Designouveau, so I can't provide the code. You can see the result here:

Users with accounts on the Research Computing Initiative (RCI) and the Instructional Computing Initiative (eden, pegasus, clam) computing systems may serve documents to the World Wide Web from their accounts. This document will give instructions on how create a web page and how to publish it to the web.
Creating a website
A web page is a document written in HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language). HTML is a set of "markup" symbols contained in a file intended for display on a web browser. To create a webpage you simply create an HTML file in one of the following two ways:
  • Users who understand HTML language can create a webpage by writing their HTML directly with a text editor such as emacs, vi, or notepad.
  • HTML is not a difficult language to learn. One easy way to learn it is to edit an existing HTML file, save the changes, and click the "reload" button on the browser, to see the changes take effect. NBCS provides its users with HTML templates and instructions on how to use them. To use the RCI template click here . To use the Eden template click here . You can expand upon your template by learning more HTML from the links to the resources below. online tutorial

HowTo - Writing To A File
Being able to write to a file in your account takes a bit more work, and requires you to set some ACL information on your account. We'll assume that you don't want the casual user to be able to view this information, so we will create a non-public directory in your 'pub' area that will be used to store the file. This directory will have the following access control list:
    • system:administrators rlidwka - Standard on all directories www.usercgi rlidwk - Allow the CGI user to read/write to this directory
(please see the below section on security placing these ACL entries on your directories may expose your account to potential comprimise) And we create this directory, and set the ACL's with the following commands:
