Classification of the Centre library
Below are some comments and clarifications of the rules used to classify (and put on shelves) the books of the Middle East Centre's library. They add to the general classification scheme indicated in the categories page.
Geography
The basic units are the modern states. The following directions apply:
General vs. geographic: A, NA, P.
There are three general, non-geographic categories: A , for books not on the Middle East or Africa, NA , for Islam and P , for Arabic language and literature.
  • A is used for books where the topic has no relation to the region, including e.g. Arabic translations of European literature, and general works in human and social science (thus general works on Imperialism, put under A 970
However, if any identifiable part of the book, thus a chapter or a paper, concerns the region, classification is made on the basis of that part.
NA is used for works generally on Islamic topics, which are not classifiable to a particular country.
Used for presentations and discussions of ideas, irrespective of the author's origin.

Annual Report Annual Report Yaoundé, regional delegation (covering Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, São Tomé and Principe) Cameroon enjoyed relative stability in 1999. There were no further tensions with Nigeria over the Bakassi peninsula, following the repatriation in 1998 of all Nigerian and Cameroonian POWs and civilian internees held in connection with the dispute [24] and pendinga decision on the issue by the International Court of Justice. A new contender for ownership of the territory presented itself in the form of Equatorial Guinea, without, however, resort to violence. People displaced by the conflict began gradually to return to their homes.
Visits to detainees begin in Cameroon
Having received a positive response from the Cameroonian authorities to its offer of services at the end of 1998, the ICRC began visits to all categories of detainees in March. During the first round of visits, it registered some 50 security detainees. It made various representations to the authorities to improve detention conditions and to address the issue of lengthy periods of preventive detention. The ICRC also under-took a water and sanitation programme in some prisons for the benefit of all the inmates.
The ICRC and the Cameroonian government signed a new headquarters agreement on 31 March. The signing ceremony took place in the presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and was attended by the national media.

Looters raid U.N. food warehouse in Central African Republic
By JOSEPH BENAMSSE, Associated Press BANGUI, Central African Republic (AP) - Looters carried off 1,800 tons of food from a warehouse belonging to the U.N. World Food Program after rebels captured the Central African Republic capital, an official said Wednesday. The looting began after rebels under former army chief Francois Bozize attacked the capital, Bangui, on Saturday. The insurgents captured the city Sunday, but the looting did not die down until Wednesday. The World Food Program said the stolen food was enough to feed the country's hungry children for about eight months.

During a WCS study in Cameroon, elephants scattered up to 90 different tree species, and are therefore considered a significant factor in forest regeneration and restoration. With the ban on the sale of ivory recently lifted, conservationists must keep careful track of elephant populations to insure that they remain protected from poacher's guns. WCS In Africa - Overview The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) has worked in the wilds of Africa since 1920, beginning with studies of white rhinos in South Africa by the Society's first president, William Hornaday. In 1959, WCS biologist George Schaller pioneered research of mountain gorillas in Belgian Congo (now Democratic Republic of Congo). Today, WCS funds research, training and applied conservation in 20 African countries and supports more Africa-based field scientists than any other conservation organization. In the greater rain forest ecosystem that extends throughout central Africa, WCS conducts more than 50 field conservation projects — a testimony to the global importance of one of the great wild places on Earth.
