The Cayman Islands are three islands, Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman, located in the Caribbean Sea. With a latitude between 19 degrees 15 minutes and 19 degrees 45 minutes North, and a longitude between 79 degrees 44 minutes and 81 degrees 27 minutes West, they are well within the tropical zone. Grand Cayman is about 150 miles south of Cuba and 180 miles west of Jamaica. The three islands are outcrops of the Cayman Ridge, a range of submarine mountains extending west southwest from the Sierra Maestra range in the southeast portion of Cuba to the Misteriosa Bank in the direction of Belize. The Cayman Trough lies between the Cayman Islands and Jamaica. It is the deepest part of the Caribbean, being over four miles deep. South, towards the Gulf of Honduras, is the Barlett Deep. These deep areas of ocean are in close proximity to the three islands. This, combined with the fact that Grand Cayman and Little Cayman are almost surrounded by living coral reefs, provide the Cayman Islands with some of the most popular dive sites in the world. However, there is no possibility of a fishing industry because apart from the Cayman Bank, a five-mile by half-a-mile area some ten miles west of Grand Cayman which lies at 15 to 20 fathoms, there is no continental shelf. The total area of the three islands is about 100 square miles. Grand Cayman is about 76 square miles, Cayman Brac, 14 square miles and Little Cayman, 10 square miles.

5. About Cayman Islands: Geography & History

Geography
Grand Cayman is the largest and most populated island; it is some 480 miles south of Miami, 150 miles south of Cuba and about 180 miles west of Jamaica. Grand Cayman is approximately 22 miles long, from east to west, and a maximum of 8 miles wide. One of the most striking features is a shallow, reef-protected sound on the north side of the island, which is seven miles long by six miles wide, almost cutting the island in half.
Cayman Brac is a small island about 90 miles northeast of Grand Cayman; it is 12 miles long and a little over 1 mile wide. Little Cayman, 7 miles away from Cayman Brac, is only 10 miles long by 2 miles wide.
All three islands are extremely low-lying, with the highest point on Grand Cayman being only 50 feet. Although largely of limestone and therefore with only limited areas of fertile soil, Grand Cayman is quite heavily wooded, with a wide variety of trees and flowering plants and bushes.
History
The recorded history of the Islands began with the sighting in May 1503 of Cayman Brac and Little Cayman by Columbus during his fourth and last West Indian voyage. The large number of turtles found around the islands attracted ships of many nations for revictualling purposes, but no early settlement was made.

Geography The Cayman Islands comprise three islands situated in the Western Caribbean, 150 miles south of Cuba. The islands, Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman cover an area of 100sq miles together. They consist of limestone outcroppings which are the tips of a submarine mountain range called the Cayman Ridge and extend off Cuba's southeast coast to the Misteriosa Bank near Belize. There are no rivers due to the porous limestone rock, although this accounts for the transparency of the surrounding Carribean Sea, often over 120ft. Grand Cayman is the largest of the three islands and measures 22 miles in length and 8 miles at its widest point. The islands are surrounded by coral reefs which create ideal conditions for divers and anglers. Cayman Brac is the most scenic island with a large bluff rising west to east along the island and rises to 140 feet at the eastern tip ending in a sheer cliff. The island is only 12 miles long and slightly over a mile wide.
