    THEME VISITS
Belgium is a country rich in beautiful castles and gardens worth a visit. First day Morning
Brussels - Gaasbeek - Namur : The castle of Gaasbeek is set at the heart of the "Pajottenland", the country of Brueghel the Elder. It offers an amazing collection of old furniture, formidable Brussels and Tournais wall tapestries which date back to the 16th and 18th century. Lunchbreak.
    Afternoon
Namur - Annevoie : The castle of Annevoie from the 18th century is set in unique green surroundings. This is one of the most beautiful parks in Europe. After the visit, back to Namur. Namur is located at the foot of an impressive rock formation and at the junction of the river Sambre and the Meuse. Namur is an ancient and fortified city. It is now the capital of the Walloon region. The attractive city and its exceptionally beautiful surroundings offer ample opportunity for leisurely walks. Second day Morning
Departure from Namur (with luggage) to Dinant . Situated in the picturesque Meuse valley, Dinant is the gateway to the Ardennes. Dinant was the birthplace of Adolphe Sax, the inventor of the saxophone and of painters such as Patenier and Wiertz. Because of the stunning belltower of the collegiate church, the impressive fortress and the Bayard Rock, Namur is one of the highlights of Walloon cultural heritage. Visit of the city and the fortress. Lunchbreak.

    http://www.europeangardentours.com/castles.htm
CASTLES INTRODUCTION TO CASTLES As with gardens castles have had innumerable books written about them quoting design, styles, ages etc and I am not going to try to precis them in a few lines. I do think however that one or two notes are helpful in distinguishing the various types and the logical development. The castles that we use as our yardstick are those built between the 11th and 16th centuries in Great Britain and Northern Europe. The English castle whose design was imported from Normandy following the Norman invasion of 1066 was essentially defensive. The Normans had to hold down a belligerent conquered people and their way was to build a network of castles. William the Conqueror has a ring established around London, including Rochester, Windsor and Berkampstead. These in conjunction with the Tower of London - the White Tower then - acted as a screen around the capital. In the north of England it was not so easy and until the reign of Henry VIII there were still border attacks. The castles remained strong and well defended until well into the sixteenth century. Thus for hundreds of years the Duke of Northumberland remained influential as much because of the soldiers he could muster as his personality.

    Belgium: Exploring Brugge,
    By Reed Ide
To me Belgium has always been the stretch of highway or rail tracks I travel between Paris and Amsterdam. I've never gotten off the train in Brussels, never turned off at the exit to Antwerpen. Neither have I ever received much encouragement to do so. Thus, I was more than a little surprised recently when, during a visit to Amsterdam, my friends proposed a driving trip to Belgium. The impetus for the idea may well have come from the fact that they had just purchased a car, and were eager to take it on a trip. Whatever the reason, we set off from Amsterdam one morning bound for the Belgian city of Brugge. The drive took us through Zeeland, a series of islands in the south of Holland. We traveled by ferry, and drove across the huge sluices that protect the southern Dutch lowlands from the rages of the North Sea. We stopped to walk on the beach just before our final ferry ride. "Are we in Belgium yet?" I asked the question every few minutes once we were off the ferry. "You'll know when we're in Belgium, believe me," my friend Martin replied. I still get excited when crossing into a new country, and with open borders in Europe, I was afraid of missing the moment. But Martin was right. I knew when the border was crossed. It wasn't just the different color of pavement on the road that told me. In the space of a few hundred meters, the landscape changed. Houses were built of different colored brick. Yards and gardens were less manicured, houses and farms more spread out. Road signs appeared more haphazard.
