Cruise Diva Goes Ashore: Antwerp, Belgium Diamonds are indeed a girl's (and Antwerp's) best friend. It's here that 70% of the world's diamonds are sent to be cut, polished, and set. Splendid art nouveau and art deco architecture and charm belie the fact that Antwerp is one of Europe's leading port cities. As in the rest of Belgium, three languages are all "official" and, depending on where you are, you'll hear Flemish, French, or German. Diversions Taxis meet arriving cruise ships and Antwerp features a tourist-friendly network of trams. Plan a stroll through the narrow cobbled streets and broad squares of the old town, one of the cultural capitals of Europe. It's a short walk from the pier to the city center and the Grote Market or main square lined with cafes, shops, the Renaissance style Stadhuis (town hall), Brabo Fountain, and guild houses. Also close to the pier, the National Maritime Museum is housed in the Steen, a 12th-century medieval castle.

No worries, there's lots of things you can do here for free. Enjoy! To locate the sights mentioned above, take a look at this online city map If you need to take a bus or tram to get somewhere, a single ticket costs only 40BF; a ticket for 10 rides is 300BF. Click here for timetables Sightseeing in the City Centre Like in most European cities, you can easily spend an entire day just walking around the historic centre, taking in all the sights and architecture. Be sure not to miss the Grote Markt (central square), Cathedral, Carolus Borromeus-church, or het Steen (castle). But there are many other fine buildings; just follow your nose. Linkeroever You can get to the left bank (Linkeroever) of the Scheldt River by taking the pedestrian tunnel from Sint-Jansvliet. From this side you can get a really nice view of the city's landmarks. Faced towards the river, follow it to your left to get to the "beach" of St. Anna. It isn't much of a beach really - and I wouldn't recommend getting into the water - but on a sunny day this is a good place to have a picnic and just relax. Nicer, but a bit farther away, (ideal if you have a bicycle) is Lake Galgenweel, which you can reach by following the Scheldt in the other direction.

EXPLORING THE MUSEUMS OF BELGIUM
By Linda Perez (guide Linda Kaye
When my husband and I arrived in Belgium for a 7-day stay, we were excited about what we would discover, as we both love history, old buildings, and breathtaking landscapes. We found it all in Belgium.
Belgium's history dates back to the Middle Ages, so it's not surprising that a great variety of museums exist to document the country's rich past. For some, the word museum conjures up visions of a sterile, boring place from which the visitor often feels estranged. However, we did not find this to be true. The museums we visited were not only instructive and innovative, but also entertaining and inspiring.
Brussels
has over 100 museums of both the traditional and unique variety. How about the Little Museum of Nesting Boxes and Feeders (for bird lovers) or the Museum of Fairground Organs, Music Boxes, and Gramophones? The most unusual museum we found was the Museum of Sewers, which explores the history of urban development from a public-health standpoint. You can even get a guided tour of an underground sewer system!
On a walking tour of Old Brussels, we were introduced to the

Archeological water castle from the XV century (probable), named " Vlattenhaus ", city "Eynatten" in Belgium. The building is actually completely renovated by the private owner, so it was important for the monumental protection administration to proceed to a opto-photogrammetrical inventory
Old monastery from the XIIIX-XIX century first executed (in 1998) important project for the city administration, the monastery was transformated into a scool. The challenge was the height and complexity of the building in 3 sections, the front facade is partly hidden by trees.
Little rural chapel, city "Membach" in Belgium. This little beautyfull object with is the ideal mini-project . All decors (front door, side windows) are reproduced with a impressive quality level.
Great middle age house " Lionheart irregularity from the front facade for static analysis. Beautyfull medieval facade paintings was also previeved for a monumental protection database with digitised pictures.

Architecture It's not until after A.D. 1000, when the Romanesque style appeared, that we can really begin to discuss Belgian architecture per se. Even then it's difficult to talk about a Belgian style, because the history of the area that was Belgiumthat is, Flanders and Walloniadoes not lend itself to an easy architectural definition or history. If a general statement can be made about Flemish architecture (as distinct from that of Holland) it is that it drew its inspiration from the south and was more often directly influenced by France, whereas Holland's was influenced by Germany. The greatest example of the Romanesque in Belgium is Tournai's magnificent black marble cathedral, which actually contains a hodgepodge of styles. Its nave (dating from 1110) retains the original Romanesque fenestration; the east end is Gothic; and the transepts are in a transitional style. Belgium also has a number of castles that exhibit Romanesque traces, such as the one in Antwerp's port, the Steen, and Ghent's Gravensteen Castle, which was the seat of the counts of Flanders.
