This trip was as close to perfect as you can get. I had time with friends and alone time. Stayed in hotels, a castle, and with friends. Did some hiking, sightseeing, saw a show, and went to plenty of pubs and coffeehouses. Saw a lot of new places and a few familiar ones. Used several modes of transportation (planes, boats, by foot, trains, and cars). The only real problem was in Belgium where nothing seemed to work (see details in my journal ). I didn't even take any pictures in Belgium. I was also in London for a half a day, but I didn't take any pictures there either. A dog on the roof of a pub

    INTRODUCTION TO CASTLES
As with gardens castles have had innumerable books written about them quoting design, styles, ages etc and I am not going to try to precis them in a few lines. I do think however that one or two notes are helpful in distinguishing the various types and the logical development.
The castles that we use as our yardstick are those built between the 11th and 16th centuries in Great Britain and Northern Europe. The English castle whose design was imported from Normandy following the Norman invasion of 1066 was essentially defensive. The Normans had to hold down a belligerent conquered people and their way was to build a network of castles. William the Conqueror has a ring established around London, including Rochester, Windsor and Berkampstead. These in conjunction with the Tower of London - the White Tower then - acted as a screen around the capital.
As I said these castles were essentially defensive, designed to protect the Norman families who were granted the land by William. They originally consisted of a mound of earth thrown up with a tower or 'keep' on top, possibly surrounded by a palisade around the bottom and in turn frequently surrounded by a moat. The palisade contained the bailey. The keep was not living quarters normally but a last line of defence in case of attack and the main living area was the bailey where the Lord had a comfortable hall and where there were houses for his soldiers and retainers and their families, stables for the animals as well as the various necessary service buildings, blacksmith, farrier, armourer, etc. In the case of sustained attack the whole countryside include villagers and their beasts could be taken into the bailey for protection and in dire necessity the whole would be withdrawn into the keep.

City wall, rue de Villers, Brussels
Photo : Ministry of the Brussels- Capital Region The forthcoming Heritage Days in the Brussels Capital Region will be held on 14 and 15 September 2002. The theme chosen by Willem Draps, Secretary of State, for this 14th Brussels edition is "Archaeology: from the Neolithic period to the Industrial Revolution". This theme, which has the scope to amaze, is intended to show people all the components of the regional archaeological heritage and to offer an archaeological approach to the heritage in general. The urban areas which we frequent on a daily basis have been shaped over the millennia by constant human activity. Although some people might not believe it, the concept of the archaeological heritage is not limited to the buried heritage. This heritage is also present above the ground, in the form of buildings from every era which reveal ancient focal points, in the changes that we can study that have been undergone by each landscape as time has gone by and in the traces of much more recent industrial activities which have already ceased. Furthermore, archaeological sites sometimes turn into veritable protected historic monuments, while certain outstanding structures are sometimes removed as being mere archaeological objects, according to Willem Draps. The two Heritage Days will therefore focus not only on archaeological sites, some of them currently under excavation, but also on built archaeology, landscape archaeology, industrial archaeology and archaeological collections, and on numerous disciplines associated with archaeology and relating to the earth, natural and historical sciences.

As the headquarters of the Stella Artois brewery, it has earned the title of beer capital of Belgium and several breweries are open to visitors keen to learn more about beer-making techniques both old and new.
Leuven is also famous for its Catholic university. It was founded in 1425 and had gained such a reputation by the 16th century that it was deemed one of Europe's leading seats of learning. It is still the largest university in Belgium, with some 25,000 students based in several noteworthy buildings scattered throughout the city.
Since Leuven is not a huge city it is easy to see it all on foot, particularly as many areas are pedestrianised.
    Statues and paintings
The Grote Markt is one of the chief attractions and is surrounded by flamboyant buildings. They include the Gothic-styled Stadhuis with its exterior terraced turrets, fancy stonework and lavish interior displaying more than 200 statues and paintings by many famous artists.
The Sint Pieterskerk, the oldest church in Leuven, is impressive. It dates from the 15th and 16th centuries and has some interesting architecture and furnishings plus a Museum of Religious Art in the treasury that houses Dirk Bouts' famous 'Last Supper' painting.

(program description) Places we explore Normandy Rouen Hornfleur Bayeau Normandy WWII Beaches Mont St. Michel Brittany Fougeres Program Description: The rising star of European medieval tourism, Belgium's Brugge is the only town in northern Europe with a Michelangelo statue. Despite its growing numbers of tourists, Brugge's cobbled charm continues to shine. Recalling the life of an average medieval citizen, we visit an almshouse, a lace-making school, and a refuge for war widows or beguinage in French. After a quick stop in Brussels, this itinerary takes us to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, one of Europe's great secrets. This battle-scarred history is a giant legacy for such a tiny country. That impact seems evident in Luxembourg's many fortresses, peace-loving people, and its central role in the current unity of the European Community. TIPS on money changing and local food specialties Check out our list of top of page top of page Program Description: Travelers going from dramatic sites of ancient battles to somber World War II memorials are reminded, also, that this region featurers tasty local cuisine; cider, apple brandy, camembert and crepes. Sampling as he goes and settled into Honfleur and Mont St. Michel, Rick Steves day-trips to Normandy, the historic coast of France. Along the way, at Rouen and Bayeaux, we recall centuries-old struggles from William the Conqueror to Joan of Arc. At Normandy's D-Day beaches of World War II we think about a more recent battle, and then move on to Brittany Fougeres' castle, a symbol of the Celtic struggle against France.

Renaissance Term generally used for periods that hark back to the culture of Classical antiquity. Though it has applications elsewhere, it is most often used to refer to that era in Europe, beginning approximately in the 14th century, in which a new style in painting, sculpture and architecture was forged in succession to that of Gothic and in which, in a broader cultural sense, the transition from the Middle Ages to the modern age was made. This period culminated in the High Renaissance, a brief phenomenon confined essentially to Italy in about the first two decades of the 16th century and supremely embodied in some of the work of that time by Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael. Following this came that phase of the late Renaissance called MANNERISM. There are more than 45,000 articles in The Grove Dictionary of Art .
