Training in the Performing Arts Edward Birch (Senior Education and Employment officer, Arts Council of England) takes a look at vocational training for the performing arts and provides a useful checklist for prospective students who are considering embarking on a training course in the performing arts. You maybe spoilt for choice but the advice from Edward is to fully consider the strengths of each course before making that all-important commitment. Spoilt for Choice
The range of vocational training opportunities available in Britain can match anything available in Europe and at its best, is still recognised as a world leader. With a large number of excellent examples of quality training providers throughout Britain, we are fortunate to have an effective infrastructure serving the needs of the performing arts industry. With such a vast array of options in vocational training, a student may presume that any course can provide the necessary route to professional employment. In fact, a number of key issues should be considered, starting with the real purpose of vocational training

Career Resources By Field
Arts
The Right Stuff
Performing arts place an emphasis on technique and talent, and, to a lesser extent, experience. The more practical experience you have, the more likely you'll be to get the job. You can get a great deal of experience through campus theatre, a-cappella, orchestra, and dance groups, and you can also audition for professional organizations in the Boston area. Since a performing arts resume is very different from a standard resume, you may want to meet with the OCS arts counselor for assistance in putting together your resume. Visual and applied arts positions will require you to present a portfolio of your work. Professors in the VES department should be able to assist you with the preparation of your portfolio. Arts management places an emphasis on skills such as writing, organization, leadership, the ability to work as part of a team, and communication skills. You'll find many opportunities to develop this skill-set through extra-curricular activities and internships.
Goals and Timelines With the exception of the performing arts, people looking for jobs in the arts will generally begin researching organizations and conducting informational interviews in the fall semester of the senior year. This will likely carry over into the spring semester, when you'll begin the actual job search and application process.

Careers in Visual Arts
Careers in Visual Arts High school students can prepare for rewarding careers in art by participating in high school art classes, supplemented by community-based art instruction, such as the IPFW Community Arts Academy (260-481-6059). Visiting art galleries and museums, reading about art, and talking with professional artists are also beneficial. Students should maintain a good grade point average in all of their studies. Careers in Theatre High school students can prepare for a career in theatre by participating in a wide variety of cultural events, including high school and community theatre productions, music and dance groups, computer design, industrial arts, visual arts and marketing, as well as athletics. A college preparatory program with literature classes and supplementary theatre education in community-based theatre programs, such as the IPFW Community Arts Academy 260-481-6059, are also beneficial. A degree in theatre can greatly expand your career possibilities. Learning to communicate with people through the interpretation of dramatic literature is only one of skills that theatre training provides.
A degree in theatre does not imply that you will have to become the cliche' of a starving artist. The important thing to remember is that you are limited in your career possibilities only by your imagination. The more varied the skills in theatre, the more marketable the individual. If you see yourself as the next Barbra Streisand, you have already limited yourself. But if you see yourself as working in a costume shop sewing her gowns or with a scenic studio painting her sets, your chances at getting a job are good. "Love the art in yourself, not yourself in the art."-Stanislavski. Students who graduate with a degree in theatre often embark on careers in acting (both stage and screen), theatre design and technology, and education. IPFW graduates are also well prepared for any profession demanding skill in reading, comprehension, analysis, speaking and organization. Theatre students have gone on to many diverse careers such as theatre managers, stage managers, scenic painters, public relations managers, teachers, corporate C.E.O's, lawyers, advertising personnel, graphic designers, and the list goes on.
