Press Release

In each year between 1994 and 1996, more than 7,000 individuals received a Ph.D. in life-science, and the number of graduates is rising sharply. If present trends continue, about half of those graduates will have found permanent positions as independent researchers within ten years after graduation. These statisticsand the labor market situation they reflectcan be viewed either positively or negatively depending on whether one is a young scientist seeking a career or an established investigator whose productivity depends on the labor provided by an abundant number of graduate students. This book examines the data concerning the production of doctorates in life-science and the changes in the kinds of positions graduates have obtained. It discusses the impact of those changes and suggests ways to deal with the challenges of supply versus demand for life-science Ph.D. graduates.

INTERDISCIPLINARY PROGRAMS Several Life Sciences faculty also take part in interdisciplinary programs available to students: Graduate Degree-Granting Programs
  • Molecular and Cellular Biology
The Molecular and Cellular Biology Program at ASU is a degree-granting graduate program. Core faculty members are housed in various departments at ASU (Bioengineering, Biology, Chemical and Materials Engineering, Chemistry/Biochemistry, Microbiology and Plant Biology) and affiliated and adjunct faculty come from highly diverse biomedical and biotechnology disciplines in the Phoenix area. The exciting and broad range of topics addressed by the faculty as a whole provides for rich, multidisciplinary research and learning opportunities for graduate students. Graduate degrees obtained through this program will prepare students for careers that span traditional disciplinary boundaries. Broad-based, interdisciplinary training will provide valuable training for professional careers in academic and governmental institutions, biotechnology industry, and health and biomedical sciences.
  • Exercise Science
The Ph.D. in Exercise Science is a research degree. It is an interdisciplinary degree offered by a group of faculty members from seven different departments. Each of the Exercise Science faculty members has a special expertise in one of three areas in which students can focus their study: Biomechanics, Physiology of Exercise, and Motor Control and Psychology of Exercise and Sport.

    ICT/Life Sciences Research
When leading edge micro and nanotechnology is coupled to biotechnology, breakthrough products and research result which will profoundly impact all the Life Sciences. The impact of these synergies has already been felt in the earlier than expected Human Genome project successes. NMRC has developed a critical mass of research expertise in this emerging discipline, conducting research on microsystems technology for clinical diagnostics, microfluidics, gene chip fabrication technology and chemical micro-analysis systems. This research is targeted at developing "lab-on-a-chip" technology, seeking to replace highly skilled laboratory analyses with easy to use diagnostic platforms.
    DNA Diagnostics Technology
The emerging clinical diagnostic challenges posed by e.g. multi-drug resistant Tuberculosis are being researched in NMRC using breakthrough ICT and molecular biology technologies. DNA diagnostics offer great promise but these complex methods require the release of DNA from cellular material, followed by refining and amplifying the nucleic acid to measurable levels and then detecting the specific strains. NMRC is researching techniques at all three stages, as shown below.
