COLLEGE of
LM069 - Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Engineering
Introduction
Computer Engineering is one of the fastest growing branches of engineering, involving the design and deployment of computer based systems to solve engineering problems.
Computer Engineers work in many different areas:
Students of Computer Engineering share the same syllabus as those studying Electronic Engineering at UL for the first two years. After year two students have the option to transfer between these two courses.
The B Eng in Computer Engineering is accredited by the Institute of Engineers of Ireland (IEI) and is internationally recognised. Graduates may become corporate members of the institute (MIEI) and become Chartered Engineers (CEng) following the required work experience.
Graduates may pursue higher degrees by research (M Eng, PhD, etc), or through taught postgraduate programmes (M Eng, MBA, etc).

Regenerative Fuel Cells May Give Remote Site Infrastructure a New Alternative for Backup Power
Dr. Jeffrey Colborn and Susan Connell, Metallic Power, Inc.
When utility power fails at remote sites with critical cellular infrastructure equipment, small switches, fiber optic regeneration and similar systems; every minute of downtime can cost thousands of dollars. Regenerative fuel cells using zinc/air technology may offer a promising alternative to current methods of providing extended backup for installations that may be hours away from the nearest service personnel. This technology addresses the special needs of remote facilities for a low-maintenance means of providing many hours of backup time with a high tolerance for environmental extremes, manageable weight and zero emissions for indoor/outdoor operation.
Remote Sites Demand Extended Backup
According to the US Fuel Cell Council, energy consumption in the industrialized world is projected to grow approximately 25 percent between 1995 and 2010, while consumption in developing nations is expected to grow more than 75 percent. Escalating demand, utility deregulation and aging infrastructure have each contributed to mounting uncertainty about the availability of utility power. These demands can be compounded in remote areas that do not always receive the same level of maintenance as more populated regions.
Traditionally, remote operations have relied upon a variety of solutions to address their particular backup power needs. The most common solutions have included various configurations of battery banks and engine generators. Increased infrastructure demands coupled with shortcomings of existing solutions, have caused those responsible for infrastructure reliability to seek new alternatives for the long duration backup power that can be vital to continuous operation for remote sites.

Why study Physics? The Bachelor of Technology (Optoelectronics)
This degree was designed to address the growing needs of the optoelectronics and photonics industry in Australia. Students develop a high level of technical skills and acquire meaningful industrial experience. It is nationally recognised as a leading degree in Optoelectronics and, as such, has been emulated by 3 Australasian universities. It is accredited by the Australian Institute of Physics as a physics degree. The Bachelor of Technology degree in Optoelectronics covers the design and function of optoelectronic technologies (devices and systems that use both light and electrical signals in their operation), and photonic devices and systems (that use only light), as well as the physics, electronics and mathematics of their operating mechanisms. Examples of optoelectronic/ photonic technologies include laser systems, fibre-optic communication systems, remote sensing systems, medical diagnostic systems and optical information systems.

HP makes breakthrough in molecular electronics
By Laura Rohde
September 9, 2002 6:12 am PT
HEWLETT-PACKARD UNVEILED WHAT it termed a major breakthrough in molecular electronics research on Monday, bringing the company forward in its goal to build complex molecular-scale chips that will in turn be developed into a future generation of smaller, faster and cheaper chips.
The Palo Alto, Calif.-based company was able to create the highest density electronically addressable memory on record through its use of molecular grids, HP said in a statement. The nanotechnology advancement was announced in Stockholm by Stan Williams, an HP fellow and director of quantum science research at HP Labs, HP said.
Through its latest developments, HP has created a laboratory demonstration circuit using a system of manufacturing called nano-imprint lithography (a combination of optical and electron beam lithography) that for the first time has combined both memory and logic on the circuit using rewritable, nonvolatile molecular-switch devices, HP said.
