For Immediate Release DOWNTOWN BERKELEY NOONTIME! The Place to Be for Music and Entertainment Berkeley, California (Thursday, September 21, 2000) The Downtown Berkeley Association is continuing its Fall concert series, FALL FOR THE ARTS The concerts at the Downtown Berkeley BART Plaza (Shattuck Ave. at Center St) are a showcase of the culturally rich performing arts in Berkeley and the Bay Area from eclectic jazz and African percussion music, to classical ensembles and children performing swing, folk and Cuban dances.
On Thursday, September 21, Pascal Bokar presents an explosive unit composed of African percussion players, traditional dancers and a rhythm section, melding all the colors of West African music, jazz and pop. The colorful costumes of the traditional dancers paint the stories of West Africa's powerful cultural heritage, dignity and soul. Pascal's music is guaranteed to take you on a musical voyage around the world that you are not likely to forget.

Heritage award goes to Princeton picker
June 24, 2001
E ddie Pennington, the thumbpicking guitarist from Princeton, Ky., is among 13 people awarded 2001 National Heritage Fellowships by the National Endownment for the Arts. The $10,000 prizes are considered the top honor in folk and traditional arts. Pennington is being honored for his virtuoso playing in a style born in his native Muhlenberg County. "This instrumental technique requires the thumb to keep a regular rolling rhythm while the fingers pick the lead melody," says the NEA citation. "Popularized by Merle Travis and further developed by instrumentalists such as Chet Atkins, this music had a common source in Mose Rager, a guitarist from the region. Eddie Pennington, the son of a coal miner, also learned from Mose Rager, but he stayed home in Princeton, Ky., to become a county coroner and funeral director. Music was a part of his family heritage. "Today, Pennington continues to play this ornamental instrumental style." Other 2001 fellowship recipients: Celestino Avilis

US Tour: 2002-2003 Tap dancing wonder Herbin "Tamango" Van Cayseele from French Guiana tours his dynamic and wildly entertaining Urban Tap dance show Caravane across the USA this year. Tamango was born in Cayenne, French Guiana, a young man with an artistic bent who dreamed of becoming a painter. It was in Paris that he was first inspired by a tap dancing street performer. Tamango learned to dance at the American Centre in Paris with American teacher Sarah Petronio, then worked with a street band. After he moved to New York, he busked the ferries, tapping, drumming and singing. He briefly joined Riverdance, then set out to create his own style of tapping, which was influenced by African-American reviews like Stormy Weather and stars like Gregory Hines and Buster Brown. In the last few years Tamango has emerged as both an astonishing dance star and an imaginative impresario. The New York Times recently raved, "Tamango is an astonishingly fluid performer, always loose with swiveling hips, rubbery legs and a mobile torso but still brilliantly sharp in the crystal clear virtuosity of his complex tapping. To say he is light on his feet would be to deny the staccato impulses of his articulate rhythms. Yet typically, his feet skim the floor with amazing speed."
