Endangered Species Thailand has some of the world's richest natural habitats and is home to some unique plant and animal treasures. The country encompasses diverse kinds of natural ecosystems, ranging from the hill evergreen and coniferous forest, on the higher altitudes in the north and the upper portion of the northeast, through to moist evergreen, dry evergreen, deciduous, dipterocarps, to the lowland rainforest and coastal mangroves plus an abundance of coral reefs around the islands to the south. Diversity
From a total land area of 513,115 sq. km, Thailand possesses an amazing diversity of living organisms; 280 species of mammals; more than 950 species of birds; 300 species of reptiles; 107 species of amphibians; 1,900 species of fish; approximately 10,000 vascular plants and thousands of insects and invertebrate species. Much of Thailand's diverse wildlife can still be found in more than 180 protected areas, with some 14% of the total land area reserved. These reserved areas consist of 89 National Parks, 47 Wildlife Sanctuaries, and 53 designated non-hunting areas. Threats
Threatened Species

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has listed more than 35 species as critically endangered, endangered, or vulnerable with some species now believed extinct.

But one population of these cuddly creatures, the American Indian Song Dog, has dwindled to a pathetic number. Previously used to round up buffalo in the days of the Wild West, these canines are now in need of saving. Stuart Robinson met with one UK breeder who is trying to do just that. Interpreting the Physical evidence of predation on Domestic Livestock
Martin B. Main
General Comments
Predation is a natural process whereby one animal, the predator, kills and eats another animal, the prey. Only animals that are strictly plant eaters are not considered predators. However, there are numerous other causes of animal deaths, including parasites, disease, poisonous plants, starvation, exposure to severe weather, ingestion of metal objects that penetrate the digestive tract, bloat, suffocation, lightning, and snake bite. Many predators will scavenge carcasses. Therefore, evidence of predators feeding on the carcasses of livestock does not serve as proof of predation. In general, livestock killed by predators will exhibit subcutaneous (beneath the skin) bruising and puncture wounds. Livestock that are already dead and are scavenged by coyotes and other potential predators do not exhibit bruising because their heart can no longer pump blood to the wound. Bruising beneath the skin, therefore, is a clear indication that predation has occurred. Other indications of predation include blood on the ground and with larger calves and sheep there may be evidence of a struggle, such as trampled and bloody vegetation. Individual species of predators often follow a general pattern of killing animals that helps to identify the culprit. However, some individuals within a species vary in the method of attack and feeding behavior. These behaviors may overlap between individuals of different species; thus other evidence, such as tracks and feces in the area of the carcass, are often essential to correctly identify the responsible predator.

http://www.wolfpark.org/wolfdogs/guidelines.html
Guidelines for Keeping Wolves and Wolf-Dog Hybrids In our concern for the safety of people and for the proper care of the animals, we make the following points below:
  • Wolves and high-content wolf hybrids should never be regarded as pets. If kept in captivity, whether in zoos, wildlife parks, or by private persons, they should be maintained so as to meet certain minimum standards in keeping with their psychological and physical well-being.
  • The wolves should be hand-raised from before the age of 14 days (no later than 21 days), to insure that they are properly socialized to people. The pups need to be isolated from adult canines except for brief visits (less than a few hours per week) for the first four months of life to properly bond with humans. They do, however, need some contact with other canines, or should be raised together in pairs or as a litter to prevent them from fully imprinting on people. If this is not done, they will be flighty and hard to handle, especially for medical treatment, for the rest of their lives. This will result in considerable behavioral stress for the animals even during routine medical care.
  • There should be at least two animals raised together. Being highly social animals, they need companions of their own species. Wolves and hybrids raised in isolation from their own kind often display a variety of behavioral problems and abnormalities.

Site Map By Andy Kerr Column #11 - Go to next column 745 words Published: 19 December 1996, Wallowa County Chieftain Since before Oregon became a territory, government has sought to eliminate the wolf in the name of protecting livestock. Such a policy, if it ever did make sense, doesn't today. The last documented wolf kill in the state was in 1963. It's time to welcome back the wolf. They might come back on their own, or they may already be here. There have been recent and numerous reports of wolves in Oregon, most often on the Rogue River National Forest. The presence of young suggest they may be reproducing. Are these a relic of the believed to be extinct Cascade timber wolf subspecies, or were they released by parties unknown, or have they moved in from elsewhere?

The stubby-legged hippo may walk five miles in a solitary search for food after depleting the supply of aquatic plants. It often takes over 100 pounds of grass to fill up a hungry hippo, which may weigh over 8,000 pounds and measure 15 feet long by 5 feet tall. Among land animals, only the elephant is larger. Usually born underwater, the infant hippo learns to swim before it can walk. The single offspring, which weighs only about 100 pounds, can stay underwater for around 20 seconds, compared to as long as six minutes for a mature hippo. The hippo once flourished throughout Africa, but its habitat from the Upper Nile to South Africa continues to shrink. The species is endangered.
