What is stomach cancer?
Most cancers in the stomach (A) used to appear close to the small bowel (B), but are now often found close to the oesphagus (C). Stomach cancer is the result of cell changes in the lining of the stomach. In Western Europe, stomach cancer is only about one third as common as it was 50 years ago.
The location of the tumours within the stomach has also changed. It used to be that most of the tumours were located near where the stomach joins the small bowel, now the commonest site is close to the junction with the oesophagus (gullet).
Stomach cancer is very common in Japan and the Japanese have developed an intensive and effective approach to screening for stomach cancer.

Description of Anal Cancer Anal cancer, an uncommon cancer, is a disease in which cancer (malignant) cells are found in the anus. The anus is the opening at the end of the rectum (the end part of the large intestine) through which body waste passes. Cancer in the outer part of the anus is more likely to occur in men; cancer of the inner part of the rectum (anal canal) is more likely to occur in women. If your anus is often red, swollen, and sore, you have a greater chance of getting anal cancer. Tumors found in the area of skin with hair on it just outside the anus are skin tumors, not anal cancer. Like most cancers, anal cancer is best treated when it is found (diagnosed) early. You should see your doctor if you have one or more of the following symptoms: bleeding from the rectum (even a small amount), pain or pressure in the area around the anus, itching or discharge from the anus, or a lump near the anus. If you have signs of cancer, your doctor will usually examine the outside part of the anus and give you a rectal examination. In a rectal examination, your doctor, wearing thin gloves, puts a greased finger into the rectum and gently feels for lumps. Your doctor may also check any material on the glove to see if there is blood in it. If you feel pain when touched in the anal area, your doctor may give you medicine to put you to sleep (general anesthesia) in order to continue the examination. Your doctor may cut out a small piece of tissue and look at it under a microscope to see if there are any cancer cells. This procedure is called a biopsy.

Anal cancer is more common in American women than men. It is often seen above age 60. In younger adults, it is more common in single homosexual men than in heterosexual men. This occurs because receptive anal intercourse significantly increases the risk of developing this cancer. Anal cancer is very uncommon.

Who develops cancer of the esophagus?
The esophagus is the tube that takes food from your mouth to your stomach. It is made of muscle and it is about 10 inches long. Cancer of the esophagus is particularly serious, because it can go on for a long time before it is ever detected. In fact, it often progresses to an advanced stage before there are any symptoms at all. Esophageal cancer is most common in men over the age of 60 and occurs as one of two types in most patients - either squamous cell or adenocarcinoma. Tobacco smoking combined with heavy drinking usually is associated with squamous cell carcinoma. Patients with hiatal (hy-ATE-al) hernia and constant acid "back-wash" from the stomach into the esophagus are at increased risk for developing esophageal adenocarcinoma. People who have worked with metal dust, like pipefitters, plumbers, welders and sheet metal workers also are more likely to get esophageal cancer.
