The overall responsibility for the quality of this training program lies with the Program Director, appointed by the Chairman of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. The current Director is Dr. Arthur Buchberg Graduate Studies Committee The Graduate Studies Committee is charged with coordinating all functions of the predoctoral Program in Genetics both internally and with the other Graduate Programs in the Kimmel Cancer Institute. Currently the members are: Drs. W. Edward Mercer Renato Baserga Charles Brenner Arthur Buchberg (Chairperson), Bruno Calabretta Kay Huebner , and Linda Siracusa This committee has the responsibility for: appointing temporary advisors for incoming students, approving and evaluating laboratory rotations, appointing permanent advisors (in consultation with each student), approving leaves of absence and the procedure for changing advisors. Should the need arise, decisions on the dismissal of students from the Graduate Program are made by this committee. This committee also makes recommendations to the Program Director and the graduate faculty in order to accomplish the goals of the predoctoral program. Through its chairperson the committee reports on progress of the predoctoral program to the graduate faculty when appropriate, and to the Training Committee of the KCI. This committee also reviews course and other requirements of the Program, examines new course proposals and continuously appraises the effectiveness of established courses.

The Genetics and Molecular Biology (GMB) Program of the Kimmel Cancer Center is composed entirely of NIH funded investigators with interests in the basic processes involved in tumorigenesis.
The goal of the GMB Program is to coordinate and integrate fundamental studies on the genes and associated molecular processes involved in tumorigenesis and viral pathogenesis with Clinical translational programs. It is now well known that the development of cancer requires the alteration of dozens of genes and cellular processes. Furthermore, the process of viral pathogenesis alters normal cellular functions which can lead to cancer as well as other viral associated diseases. Indeed, the first cancer genes were found to be carried by oncogenic tumor viruses. Basic research on the genetics and molecular biology of these processes has lead to a new understanding of carcinogenesis and viral pathogenesis and resulted in the rapid development of new clinical protocols. The members of the GMB Program have a long and productive track record studying many of these processes and translating that work into both a clinical and preventional setting.

Cancer Molecular Genetics Program Molecular analysis of human tumors has led to the identification of a number of genes that are involved in the pathogenesis or progression of human tumors. Mutations of cancer-related genes result in the activation of dominant oncogenes or in the inactivation of tumor suppressor genes, thereby leading to abnormal cell growth and differentiation. The overall objectives of the Cancer Molecular Genetics Program are (1) to integrate and focus the work of investigators with established research programs, (2) to characterize the biological and clinical features associated with specific genetic changes in the hematologic malignant diseases and solid tumors, and (3) to identify the genes that are involved in the pathogenesis or progression of human tumors as a result of recurring chromosomal abnormalities or other mutations. The program serves as a core of investigators with expertise in clinical cancer research, cancer cytogenetics, and molecular biology.

Cancer in families can sometimes be the result of altered genes passed from one generation to the next. Hereditary forms of breast, ovarian and colorectal cancers are only a small number of all breast, ovarian and colon cancers seen. Approximately seven percent of breast cancers and 10 percent of ovarian and colon cancers are hereditary. A genetic counselor can explain the potential benefits, risks and limitations of genetic testing. Currently, blood sampling is available to identify genes that predispose an individual to breast, ovarian and colon cancer, as well as other less common syndromes. This option is offered to those deemed appropriate for testing. All genetic testing is conducted in a manner that ensures patient privacy and confidentiality.
