The Canada Country Study provides a critical perspective for charting Canada's future. It is an important piece of knowledge on what we know today about climate change. However, a lot of work remains to be done. I commend the many individuals who have contributed to this study. The Canada Country Study consists of six regional reports, released this summer and fall, and two national summary reports. A final report on sectoral issues and matters that cut across these boundaries will be released in the spring of1998. Internationally, the Canada Country Study contributed to the preparation of a North American chapter in the Special Report on the regional impact of climate change of the UN-led Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The study will also form part of Canada's contribution to the third IPCC assessment report on the global impact of climate change, to be released in 2001. Environment Canada: The Greenlane

    Mineral and Metal Commodity Reviews
List of Producers Salt is such a common part of our everyday existence that we rarely think of it as a natural resource that must be discovered, mined, processed and marketed. Yet salt is so vital to our lives that without it we could perish. We are all benefactors of the rich deposits throughout Canada that contribute to our well-being and our comfortable way of life. The Legacy of Salt Scientists believe that, initially, seas were not salty. It took millions of years to wash out some of the salt locked up in the rocks of continents and for the waters to become brine. About 350 million years ago a large part of North America was covered by ocean. In places where bays existed with very restricted openings to the ocean, salt was deposited in great quantities by solar evaporation as the seas retreated. The deposits were subsequently covered with earth sediments. It is to these locations in Canada that we turn today for our salt supplies. The first air-breathing creature to adapt to a land environment brought a heritage from the seas which survives in man today: the salty fluids of the ocean. Salt is such an important part of the

The largest and most comprehensive collection of federal, provincial and territorial official publications published since 1867 is held at the National Library. Original copies of Canadian official publications prior to 1867 are held in the Rare Book Collection ; post-Confederation are housed as a separate collection within the Library's general collections. Federal government publications are issued from Parliament, all departments and agencies, crown corporations, joint Canadian or bilateral international organizations and the courts (Supreme Court of Canada and Federal Court of Canada.). Researchers should note that non-government published law reports usually require a 24-hour retrieval time. There are also strong collections of publications of all provincial and territorial governments, of inter-provincial bodies, and selected publications of Canadian municipalities (which until recently) were incorporated into the Library's general collection. For historical, social or comparative research you will find here a rich collection of long-run series of debates, journals, gazettes, acts and regulations, statistics including census statistics (nominal statistics are kept at the National Archives of Canada), Royal Commission reports, budgets, public hearings and memoranda, geological reports and election results. Sir Charles Fitzpatrick
Hon. Charles Fitzpatrick, Member of Parliament and Solicitor General of Canada.
    (December 19, 1853 - June 17, 1942)
The Right Honourable Charles Fitzpatrick played an active role in the evolution of Western Canada's political situation. In 1905, he took part, as the federal government representative, in the negotiations that led to the creation of the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan Charles Fitzpatrick's legal career was always as important as his political career. In 1885, he won renown as defence counsel for Louis Riel , then accused of treason by John A. Macdonald 's Conservative government. In 1897, he represented the Dominion of Canada before the London Privy Council in a case involving the fisheries. A member of the Liberal Party, Fitzpatrick sat in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1890 to 1896, and in the House of Commons from 1896 to 1906. He was solicitor general (1896) and minister of justice (from 1902 to 1906) in Sir Wilfrid Laurier's government. It was as solicitor general in 1897 that Fitzpatrick met with Pope Leon XIII and succeeded in obtaining from the supreme pontiff the envoy of Cardinal Merry del Val to settle the issue of schools in Manitoba In 1906, Fitzpatrick resigned from politics and was named chief justice of the Supreme Court of Canada. When he resigned from that position in 1918, he was made lieutenant-governor of Quebec, a post in which he remained until 1923.
