Number 6.2 June 1996 LM_NET: A Worldwide Discussion Group for School Library Media For all school library media peoplea listserv called LM_NET (library media network) has been set up to serve the school library media community, world-wide. This list is operated by Mike Eisenberg, Syracuse University, AASL, and Peter Milbury, library media specialist, Chico, California, CMLEA. The LM_NET discussion group on school library media topics started in June 1992, at the end of the K-12 school year. It has grown to over 4,000 members since then. Members come from most of the U.S., Canada, and several other countries in The Americas, Europe, Asia and Oceania. Approximately 75-100 messages are posted per day on a variety of topics related to school librarianship. We are hoping that many new school library media people will continue to join this exciting, endless discussion, bringing our community together on a daily basis. Conversation on this list will focus on the topics of interest to the school library media community, including the latest on school library media services, operations, and activities. It is a list for practitioners, sharing ideas, solving problems, telling each other about new publications and up-coming conferences, asking for assistance or information, and linking schools through their library media centers. This discussion is open to ALL school library media specialists - worldwide- and people involved with the school library media field. It is not for general librarians or educators. We want to keep the activity and discussion focused on school library media. But, the listserv can be used by library media people for many different things-to ask for input, share ideas and information, link programs that are geographically remote, make contacts, etc.

    History-Social Science Course Models http://www.history.ctaponline.org/center
The course models that appear on this site are a resource designed to assist teachers in implementing the State Board of Education adopted History-Social Science Content Standards and Framework. In addition to serving as a resource for teachers or developers of local curricula, the models may also be used to plan topics and select resources for professional development. The many and varied instructional resources identified should be helpful to librarians and directors of media centers as school collections are augmented.
Course models represent a step between the subject matter outlined in the standards and framework and classroom lesson plans and provide guidance to districts as local standards in history-social science are developed to meet systemic reform efforts. The models suggest substantive resources and instructional strategies to be used in conjunction with State Board of Education adopted print and non-print instructional resources. They serve as examples of activities from which teachers can design lessons to suit the varied needs and interests of their students. Teachers will need to prioritize topics and develop activities carefully, gauging the time necessary to convey essential learnings to students and provide unit and course coverage as well as opportunities for depth studies, activities, or projects.

Email: Patrick@bikeleague.org (WASHINGTON, DC) At the dinner, Bikes Belong board member Gary Sjoquist announced the industry’s commitment to Safe Routes to School programs to be administered by The League of American Bicyclists, the Surface Transportation Policy Project, and the California Bicycle Coalition. "There are so many great things going on in this country regarding advocacy, but one of the best is the Safe Routes to School Initiative", said John Burke, President of the Trek Bicycle Corporation and a Bikes Belong board member. "In 1970 30% of kids rode their bikes or walked to school. Today that number is less than 2%. Safe Routes is a simple program that has worked in places as diverse as Marin Country and Brooklyn. Safe Routes can get more kids riding and walking to school and that is good news for the health of American kids, for taking cars off the roads, and good news for the bicycle industry". "The California Bicycle Coalition (CBC) is enormously grateful for the bike industry’s support, and we are delighted we were able to deliver a $70,000,000 victory on Safe Routes to School within days of the Interbike dinner,” said Chris Morfas, executive director of CBC. California Governor Gray Davis signed Safe Routes to School legislation extending the popular statewide program for three years. “Now it's time to go national with Safe Routes to School construction, education and encouragement programs,” added Morfas.

1995 Administrative Leadership Award for Library Media Services Dr. Donald V. Delong
When he became superintendent of the Merced City School District in 1991, Dr. Donald DeLong found each school staffed with a full-time library media clerk and a certificated library media teacher, or a certificated teacher in the process of acquiring a library media credential. He and his staff have had to make severe cuts in the district budget since that time, as have many districts. But the Merced library staff remains intact! Dr. DeLong's testimony before the commission on teacher credentials makes it clear that his support for the library media program is not simply financial. "Even though our school district is blessed with outstanding paraprofessionals, our library media program could not succeed without the leadership of the library media teacher . . . [The] Merced City School District has successfully implemented the philosophy that each library media teacher must work collaboratively with the classroom teacher in the development and teaching of units supportive of the district's curricular goals. While the cost of maintaining credentialed library media teachers may seem economically impossible, the benefits to the classroom and the school are enormous. In short, we could not provide a library media program without a credentialed library media teacher."
