This group is making important contributions to the reverse engineering of solid shapes, image processing and industrial inspection. In his recent research, Marshall has undertaken work on the eigenanalysis of images and video data. At a fundamental level the work has developed new techniques that make such analysis more computationally tractable by allowing eigenspace models to be incrementally assembled. This enables models to be created on machines with normal memory sizes, whereas traditional batch eigenspace models may incur vast memory overheads. The techniques lend themselves to incremental learning applications. They are also used to track animated models of people in video sequences with application to gait and action analysis. A novel system has been built based on hierarchical eigenanalysis, in which models of 3D dynamics of people can be assembled from single video images after the system has been trained on 3D (multiple camera) data. Batchelor is engaged in pioneering systems engineering work on developing intelligent machine vision systems for industrial inspection. A primary aim is to make machine vision more accessible to the end user. Industry funds this research through technology transfer projects, such as metal can defect detection (USC), and counting bacterial growth (3M). He developed advanced image analysis software in the EU funded TriAXIS project on 3D X-ray inspection of multi-container packaged food products. The Royal Academy of Engineering funded his secondment to Tectonic International in 2000-01 to work on on-line inspection of printed webs.

New Paradigms in Design Automation
Abstract The field of design automation has come a very long way in the last two decades. But, the current trends in manufacturing technology and market have put a question mark on traditional methodologies of design automation. This talk briefly covers the twenty years of CAD and discusses the latest trends and challenges that the research community needs to address. Next, two new paradigms of VLSI-CAD are presented. The first address the issue of predictability in power estimation. There are certain designs that are more predictable than others. The basic question is WHY? We study the properties that make a design predictable and optimize for those properties. Of course there is a premium to pay, which is design quality. This cost, in many cases, is outweighed by the massive gains in predictability. The second design objective that we discuss is "SLACK". Through massive experimentation, we validate the claim that "SLACK" is the universal optimization objective. We then propose a design flow that optimizes slack and hence almost every other design objective. Thursday, March 21 at 4:00p.m. in Duncan Hall 1064

Mattias Nyström's thesis presentation
Mattias Nyström presented his doctoral thesis on March 6:th in the Studio. Mattias presented how Object-Orieted Mediator databases can be used for integration and optimisation in engineering.
Mattias presented diffent ideas how to integrate different types of engineering information systems (computer aided engineering systems). From CORBA based direct interfaces to object oriented mediator technology. He also described the advantages of using object-oriented databases to relational database systems in engineering.
He also described how a mediator system has been implemented into a CAE system so ordinay query language can be used to access information in the CAE system. He also presented several demontrators implemented at Volvo Cars where these technologies has been used for multi disiplinary optimimisation. Such as optimisation of exhaust systems and systems for optimal vehicle design. The external examiner was Sören Andersson from the Department of Machine elements at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm. The dissertation was done in three hours and had about 30 people in the audience. After the dissertation the examination board decided that Mattias now is entitled Ph. D Mattias Nyström.

I studied Electrical Engineering at the University of Auckland, and then went on to complete a PhD on digital data processing in radio astronomy. Following a post-doctoral research appointment at Imperial College in London, which involved the development of an interactive graphics CAD system for electronic circuits, I returned to New Zealand to take up a lectureship in computer science at the Univesrity of Waikato in 1975. In 1985, I moved on to a chair in Computer Science at Massey University, where I was also Head of Department, and from 1992-94, Dean of the School of Mathematical and Information Sciences. In 1994, I returned to the University of Waikato as Professor of Computer Science, and am currently Chairperson of the Department. From the time of my post-doctoral work at Imperial College, the main focus of my research has been human-computer interaction. Work in this area includes the MINNIE cad system, the invention of the bifocal display, the development of the Lean Cuisine notation for the description and design of direct manipulation interfaces, techniques for the evaluation of interfaces, and more recently the study of CSCW systems. I have associated interests in techniques for information representation and interacting with information, and in computer graphics and image processing.
