It suggests that the image of the mermaid is an example of diffusion, or cultural borrowing, and that this shadowy lake spirit only assumed the guise of a European-looking mermaid in the 20th century. European instruments and derivations of them include the harp, the guitar, the violin, and the accordion. The African marimba is also common in popular bands in Mexico and Central America. Trumpets also became common in Mexican bands in this century (mariachi bands). Flutes are the main contribution of native culture, most notably in the Incan region (Peru), and varied percussion instruments the main instrumental African influence, primarily along the Caribbean coasts.

Ideology in the Schoolbooks in the Belgian Congo By Honoré Vinck The following text is an adaptation and updating of a Seminar Paper discussed in the Wednesday Seminars of the Institute for Advanced Study and Research in the African Humanities at the Northwestern University, Evanston, on March 8, 1995. The text has been first published as: The Influence of Colonial Ideology on Schoolbooks in the Belgian Congo, Paedagogica Historica (Gent), 23(1995)2,355-406. Footnotes are not reproduced and updated bibliography can be found in the Bibliographical section of this African Schoolbook Project Site. Acronyms are explained in annexe. Abstract The analysis of about 50 textbooks, used in the elementary schools of the former Belgian Congo in the Region of the Equator and Upper R.D. Congo Provinces, reveals how the school education propagated the most formal colonial ideology in the terms proposed by the Belgian political authorities. Fundamental themes such as the legitimacy of the colonisation and the sources of authority, and the bearers and symbols of colonial authority take an important place in the texts posed to the children. The traditional pre-colonial beliefs and life-style were placed in opposition to the new western institutions in a black-is-bad and white-is-good terminology.

Although Dominica formally became a self-governing Associated State with Britain on 1 March 1967, celebrations were delayed until 3 November, and National Day was observed as such from then onwards. It was also the day chosen for full independence in 1978 and thereby continues a tradition that began in the 1960s. Newtown : (E) When British plans to make Portsmouth the capital of Dominica were abandoned in 1768, Royal Engineer, Nathaniel Minshall, surveyed and drew plans for transforming the French village of Roseau into the capital. This included extending the town southwards. High Street was supposed to have been the centre of the main public buildings and commerce, with the Anglican Church in the middle of the Church Savannah, now called the Newtown Savannah. The Old Roseau Boys School was the military warehouse with the landing place on the beach. It was thought that the new town would be better defended. The whole of new British Roseau was to be renamed Charlotteville after Queen Charlotte but it did not develop as planned. The name "Roseau" remained in use and the extension was simply called Newtown. Only Charlotte Valley survives from the intended name of Charlotteville and Newtown, along with Kings Hill and Citronier, has now become a thriving suburb of Roseau.
