Sites devoted to individual authors are so numerous that any attempt to list even the best would be rife with omissions. Instead, we list here the best digest sites, leaving the blame with others for the inevitable oversights.
Authors on the Web
A collection of author biographies available on the World Wide Web written by one of the authors of this page. The project is an attempt to pool available resources for biographical research and to encourage others to contribute biographies as well. It is ongoing and incomplete but the collection continually grows.
Author Webliography
Author Webliography is an "index of indexes," with annotated links to sites concerning individual authors, most of them "literary" (no Tom Clancy or John Grisham sites listed here). A project of the Louisiana State University Libraries, Author Webliography is updated regularly and is Clearinghouse approved.
The BookWire Index-Author Websites
BookWire's list includes popular as well as literary writers and, usually, enough annotation to distinguish between the two classes. It also includes links to other author sites, genre sites, and literary society sites.

    The Age of Johnson
Professor Jody Greene T Th 8-9:45 AM Porter 144 A final examination will not be required for this course. Required texts, available at the Literary Guillotine * Samuel Johnson. Samuel Johnson: Selected Poetry and Prose. Ed. Wimsatt and Brady. Berkeley: University of California Press, 1977. * Maria Edgeworth. Belinda. Oxford: Oxford University Press. * Katharine M. Rogers, ed. The Meridian Anthology of Restoration and Eighteenth-Century Plays by Women. Meridian, 1994. * Jane Austen. Emma. Norton Critical Editions, second edition, 1993. This course will offer students an introduction to British literature from 1744 to the end of the eighteenth century. Although the course is chronologically designed to pick up where "The Age of Dryden and Pope" leaves off, no prior knowledge of eighteenth-century literature will be assumed. The readings in this course are organized around the broad theme of "Independence." We will begin by reading Samuel Johnson's letter to Lord Chesterfield, rejecting Chesterfield's offer of literary patronage and asserting Johnson's ambitions as an independent author. A reading of a selection of Johnson's works will provide us with an opportunity to test just how successful he was at achieving the independence he championed.

Charles Dickens (Authors in Context) ANDREW SANDERS The Authors in Context series, a subseries of the Oxford World's Classics series, examines the work of major authors in relation to their own times and to the present day. Combining history with lively literary discussion, each volume provides comprehensive insight into texts in their context. Charles Dickens was both a representative Victorian and an artist who is quintessentially a "Post-Romantic." He was the most popular author of his age and the one who most vividly reflected the contradictory impulses of Victorian society, its energy and invention as much as its social and political anomalies. This book explores Dickens's interest in the urban phenomenon, which so marks nineteenth-century culture, and it looks at the vital interconnection between his life and his art. Like his character, David Copperfield, Dickens lived his life and pursued his career "thoroughly in earnest," but he was also a great comic writer whose work resonates well beyond his own age and continues to be recontextualized on the stage, on film, and on television. New and recent titles of related interest: Literature Oxford World's Classics Andrew Sanders is Professor of English at the University of Durham and the author of Dickens and the Spirit of the Age

Books are a large part of my life. I've got them lining the walls, piled up next to the bed, on tables, chairs and on just about every flat surface, and I still don't know what to say to the people who come to my house and ask, "so, have you read them all?"
    Australian Authors
If you're an author from the USA (or possibly the UK) writing sf, horror or fantasy then you are well-covered on the Web. If you are Australian and writing what might loosely be termed serious modern fiction then you might as well not exist. Hence, the listing of various authors below. It'll take a while for this list to come together properly so bear with me. But check it out from time to time to see if anything new has cropped up. As an added note, the names of authors listed here but which do not host a link to other pages are listed with the intention of setting up individual pages for them at some time in the future. I just don't know when.
Australian history is almost always picturesque; indeed, it is also so curious and strange, that it is itself the chiefest novelty the country has to offer and so it pushes the other novelties into second and third place. It does not read like history, but like the most beautiful lies; and all of a fresh new sort, no mouldy old stale ones. It is full of surprises and adventures, the incongruities, and contradictions, and incredibilities; but they are all true, they all happened.
