THE FRASER VALLEY
British Columbia - CANADA
The Fraser Valley is one of several distinct regions that make up what is considered to be the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. "The Valley", as it is referred to in these parts is that area extending from the community of Hope at its eastern end to the community of Langley in the west. It takes the shape of a triangle placed on its side. The point is Hope and the base is Langley/Pitt Meadows. Even though technically the area west of Langley all the way to the Strait of Georgia could be considered a continuation of the valley this area is referred to as Greater Vancouver. Another distinction made by this site is that north of Hope the Fraser River runs through what is known as the Fraser Canyon which will eventually provide content for another site dealing with aspects of the "interior".
Making extensive use of photographs this website attempts to provide anyone with an interest in Fraser Valley some understanding of the many aspects of this region. There are 9 cities/districts, a great variety of economic activity, many attractions, a mix of native and newly arrived cultures, a lively history as well as a stimulating geography, geology and biology to be dealt with. In addition, other sources available on the web will be identified to provide additional information on these subjects.

We recommend the following site for having content well suited for the understanding and enjoyment of the Fraser Valley. The MAP LINKS are especially useful to those wishing to travel in the Valley.

It is composed of ten provinces and three territories. It is bounded on the western edge by the Pacific Ocean, on the northern edge by the Arctic Ocean, on the eastern edge by the Atlantic Ocean, and on the southern edge by the United States of America (USA) . The edge running between countries is called a "border". In Canada, the country of the United States of America (U.S.A.) is either called "the States" (as in "We're going to the States for the weekend") or "the U.S." (as in "There's no public health care in the U.S."). If you want to enrage a Canadian then go ahead and refer to the States as "America". After all, Canada is in North America and so is Mexico A popular symbol of Canada is the mountie. A mountie is a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (R.C.M.P.). Their fancy dress uniform is brilliant red as illustrated in the photo taken on Parliament Hill, Ottawa on Canada Day. Canada Day is July 1st and is Canada's birthday. It used to be called Dominion Day.

Hello everyone! By now you are back in the ‘thick’ of things working with your students in the classroom. Hopefully, the entry into the 2002/03 school year has been a smooth one. Geographically speaking, things are alive and well in this region. The CCGE was fortunate to be represented by a member from our area at the National Geographic Geography Action! seminar held in Washington, DC last spring. Chris Torrance, who teaches in SD #75, Mission, represented geography teachers from across Canada. As a result of his participation, Chris will be creating exciting learning opportunities for your students incorporating the theme, Public Lands 2002. These classroom activities can be found at www.ccge.org . The National Geographical Society has also developed a program entitled ‘Take Action’ which can be found under the ‘Take Action’ section of the Geography Action! web site. Through the summer a number of activities took place. In July, I participated in the marking process of the Geography 12 exam along with 41 other educators from across the province. The students in grade 12 who excel in geography continue to demonstrate their understandings in a dynamic manner on this exam. The best and the brightest wrote exceptional papers that were a privilege to evaluate. Over 10,000 students wrote the Geography 12 exam in the 2001/02 school year.

British Columbia, the westernmost province of Canada, is bounded on the E by Alberta, on the S by Montana, Idaho, and Washington, on the W by the Pacific Ocean, on the NW by Alaska, and on the N by the Yukon and by the Fort Smtih Region of the Northwest Territories. Off its deeply indented Pacific coast lie many islands, notably Vancouver Island (c.280 mi/450 km long) and the sparsely inhabited Queen Charlotte Islands. The province is almost wholly mountainous, with the Rocky Mts. in the southeast, the Coast Mts. along the Pacific, and the Stikine Mts. in the northwest. Chief of the many rivers is the Fraser, which, with its tributaries, drains much of central and S British Columbia as it flows to the Pacific. Other rivers in that region include the upper Columbia and the Kootenay. In the north are the Peace, the Stikine, the Nass, and the Skeena. Hydroelectric resources in British Columbia are highly developed; large plants along the rivers operate pulp and paper mills. The largest station, at Kemano on the Nechako River, serves one of the biggest aluminum plants in the world, at Kitimat. Innumerable long, narrow lakes are found throughout the interior, supplying vast backwaters for dams.
