Geography Links Notes and Comments Provisional version by Neil Parsons April 1999 The Republic of Botswana is a landlocked country in the centre of southern Africa with an area of about (581,700 sq km (224,000 sq miles). The capital is Gaborone (until 1969 spelt Gaberones, i.e. "Gaborone's" named after Chief Gaborone), the modern city having been founded in 1964. Back to contents
    Boundaries
The territory is approximately 1000 kilometres from north to south and 1000 kilometres from east to west. Eastern and southern borders are river-courses and an old wagon-road; the western border consisits of lines of longitude and latitude, and the northern border combines straight line projections between distant beacons with a river course. Botswana is bounded by Namibia to the west and north (the Caprivi Strip), Zambia to the northeast, Zimbabwe to the north-east, and South Africa to the southeast and south. The actual border with Zambia along the Zambezi River, at the east end of the thin finger of Namibian territory known as the Caprivi Strip, is only a few hundred metres long. The precise demarcation of this unique four-way border junction in the Zambezi river between Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe has never been satisfactorily determined in international law. It was disputed by South Africa in the early 1970s when Botswana up-graded the 100-year old ferry service to the Zambian bank.

Field Courses Fieldwork is an integral part of the School's work and the location of Trinity College makes it an ideal centre for the study of areas such as National Parks, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beaty, National Nature Reserves, Heritage Coasts and Sites of Special Scientific Interest. Past and present industrial activities are also within reach and offer opportunities for the practical study of subject areas such as heritage tourism and the effects of industrial activities on environmental quality and wildlife. Field visits form an essential part of all courses across all three years and students are also given the opportunity of undertaking residential fieldwork abroad. Current field locations used by the School include Morocco, the Cévennes National Park in southern France and several National Parks and Game Reserves in Botswana and Zimbabwe.

The majority of the country is flat with gentle undulations. Along the eastern margin the land rises above 1,200 m, which is adjacent to the Limpopo drainage system. The Limpopo valley gradually descends from 900 m in the south to 500 m at the confluence of the Limpopo and Shashe Rivers. The landlocked country borders Namibia to the west and northwest, Zambia to the north, Zimbabwe to the northeast, and South Africa to the east and south. In the northwest the Okavango River drains inland into an extensive swamp area. In the southwest, the Kalahari Desert is characterized by a vegetation composition of scrub and grasses with almost no surface water. Pans hold water for some time after the rains. THE LAND
    Geography
    B
otswana is a completely landlocked country in the centre of Southern Africa. It is bordered by Namibia to the west, Zambia and Zimbabwe to the north east and South Africa to the south.
The country covers an area of about 582,000 sq. km and is relatively flat. Its eastern part contains the highest (1,500 metres) and the lowest (500 metres) points with hills and deep valleys. The flat vast western part is semi-arid with rocky outcrops. Two-thirds of the country is characterised by gently undulating, sandy plains covered by bush and grass. The Kalahari desert occupies more than 70 percent of the country, with valleys and pans etched across the landscape. One of Southern Africa's longest rivers, the Okavango, flows through the country's north western part, fanning out into a huge delta of some 16,800 sq. km to form a unique environment with a myriad of water channels. Climate
The climate can be hot and cold. It ranges from continental to semi-arid. Winters are dry with temperatures dropping to an extreme of about minus 7 degrees Celsius, more commonly though they are nearer zero, with July being the coldest month. Summer months can be very hot, but mean temperatures seldom rise above 39 degrees Celsius. December and January are the hottest months. They announce the rainy season which extends through to March or April.
Rainfall is erratic, ranging from 250mm per year in the south west to over 600mm in the north east. Rainy seasons occur with significant variations from year to year and periods of severe drought.
