The National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) is the “Nation’s Scorekeeper” in terms of addressing severe weather events in their historical perspective. As part of its responsibility of “monitoring and assessing the climate,” NCDC tracks and evaluates climate events in the U.S. and globally that have great economic and societal impacts. NCDC is frequently called upon to provide summaries of global and US temperature and precipitation trends, extremes, and comparisons in their historical perspective. This web page/report describes those events that have had the greatest economic impact since 1980. The authors (Ross and Lott) have also written a paper (PDF version), "A Climatology of Extreme Weather and Climate Events" , which provides a climatology of these events, and relates the events to population/societal trends and climate change.

Arequipa, Peru A 5.3 earthquake hit southern Peru collapsing small buildings on October 7. The epicenter was located 27 miles northwest of Arequipa, the country's second largest city. Small landslides closed down sections of the Pan American Highway, but mild damages were reported. Central Texas Following months of high temperatures and record drought, torrential rains and severe thunderstorms produced harsh environments in Texas during the week of October 18. More than 15 inches of rain fell in most areas producing flashfloods and casualties. Residential areas were hit by tornadoes, resulting in major damages to homes and businesses. At least 20 people were reported killed in the flooding or high winds. Thousands of residents fled the flooded areas affecting one-fourth of the state. National Guard members were called in with helicopters to help rescue victims of the flood. Twenty counties were declared disaster areas; the damage was estimated at 400 million. Philippines Two major typhoons, Babs and Zeb, struck much of Tawaiian and China killing hundreds of people and leaving over 4,000 homeless. During the week of October 14, Hurricane Zeb hit the area canceling international flights and causing major property damages. During the week of October 22, a second storm, Typhoon Babs, left a path of havoc and destruction. Numerous incidents of mudslides and flash floods caused deaths and injuries to the residents. The winds were reported as high as 150mph. More than 20 inches of rain fell in 24 hours.

The world's worst natural disasters
When man meets nature in force, nature wins By: David McCormick , January 13, 2000
For all our technology, humanity has yet to conquer the most powerful force on Earth - nature. Extreme weather and natural disasters continue to strike with little warning, wreaking havoc on the lives of millions around the globe. Here are some the most notable and deadly natural disasters humankind has ever seen.
Swirling and spiraling - the worst cyclones and hurricanes... Flooding in Bangladesh has killed more people than any other natural disaster One of the poorest and most densely populated nations in the world, Bangladesh is periodically pounded by vicious cyclones that sweep up the Bay of Bengal, unleashing terrible flooding and resulting in tremendous loss of life. In 1970, a cyclone and the resulting floods killed 500,000 people, making it the worst natural disaster of the 20th Century. Packing winds of up to 230 km/h, the cyclone slammed into the heavily populated coastal area, where several river deltas provide fertile land. The strong winds produce massive waves, which deluged entire villages. Millions of people were left homeless. "The Great Hurricane" that hit the Caribbean in October 1780 is the most deadly Western Hemisphere hurricane on record. It killed 22,000 people on the islands of Martinique, St. Eustatius, and Barbados.

74. Thanksgiving Disasters
Please post only Thanksgiving disasters here. For recipe requests, click here. Well,we had a blizzard that day, and everything was going real slow.
http://www.cyber-kitchen.com/holidays/thanksgiving/disasters.html
Thanksgiving Disasters
You bring that beautiful turkey to the table on a carving board for the head of the house to carve. Smiles abound as everyone anticipates the L-Tryptophan-laden morsels soon to be piled on their plates. In goes the knife...and out oozes red juices. The turkey isn't fully cooked. You're mortified. Twelve people sit around the table, smiles turned to sighs, and all the side dishes sit there. What can you do? You put the turkey back in the oven and everyone digs into the yams and dressing and string beans. They fill up on these and the corn bread, and when the turkey is finally done, they're all too full to touch it. Or something goes terribly wrong with the pumpkin pie...you go to slice it and discover that it never set. So you put away the dessert plates and get out the soup bowls! It's inevitable. No matter how hard you try or how careful you are, something goes wrong. We tend to make the best of it, but it often leaves an indelible imprint on our minds. Please share your own personal Thanksgiving disasters...or those which you've observed. I only ask that you keep it light...no names or personal attacks.

A Weekend of Wind Storms
Metro Toronto Area Tornado-like winds caused destruction across southern Ontario yesterday. The sudden winds ripped balconies and roofs off buildings and uprooting trees from Kitchener to Wiarton. The winds at times ranged up to 140 km/h causing damage on the same scale as weak tornados. Environment Canada said the frenzied storms weren't tornados. The wind sliced across the province, striking hardest in Oakville and Guelph. In Guelph, the winds ripped the roof off a school where a church group was playing basketball. In Brampton, a sudden blast of wind lashed at homes and hydro wires, uprooting trees and causing property damage. No one was injured.

80. Chicago ''L''.org: Mishaps & Unusual Occurrences
Weather/Natural disasters The blizzard of '79 Although the blizzard of 1967 occurredpreviously, the blizzard of '79 was the first that crippled the L system
http://www.chicago-l.org/mishaps/
Thankfully, the "L" does not have claim to the worst transportation disaster in Chicago (that dubious honor goes to the 1915 Eastland disaster in which 844 were killed when an excursion steamer capsized in the Chicago River) nor the worst train disaster (that happened in 1972 when two Illinois Central commuter trains collided at 27th Street, killing forty-five). But the "L" has had its share. It is also worth noting that many "L"-related mishaps are not the fault of the CTA or their predecessors at all, but rather Mother Nature. A fair number of crippling problems have resulted from heavy snowfalls and other nature-related mishaps. These are perhaps the most frustrating because it is difficult to be fully prepared for them and impossible to prevent them. Listed below are those incidents which could truly be called disasters in some way or another (and the term is, of course, high subjective). Each is linked to a page describing the incident, with an additional page listing those mishaps which, while disastrous in their own right, do not warrant a page all their own. : There seems to be a tendency in the United States to want to blow rail accidents out of proportion. For instance, after the Amtrak crash at Bourbannais, a vigorous discussion ensued about how unsafe rail travel is. Nothing could be further from the truth.
