Tanah Art Museum Maya Culture ~ Garcia Sisters Cayo District, Belize In the Yucateca Mayan Village of San Antonio , located on the Cristo Rey Road there is a humble limestone and clay building with a simple palm thatch leaf roof known as the Tanah Art Museum. On display in the museum are magnificent slate stone carvings of an ancient Caracol ruler, a famous Palenque elder, a Xunantunich warrior, a Maya ceremonial table for offerings of thanksgiving, and a replica of the Sun God Kunich Ahua from Altun Ha, to name just a few. Once a year the artists collect the slate stone used both now and by their ancient ancestors for carving from specific locations among the creeks and river beds. The artists are drawn to particular stones. The act of walking through the creek bed, getting soaked, putting hands on the earth, and feeling the smoothness or roughness of new stone revitalizes both the body and the spirit. It is a sacred time. These stones , some small and others very large and bulky, must now be carried back to their truck on the roadside several miles upstream.

iWon Travel Central America Belize Powered by HISTORY and CULTURE History Culture History The first inhabitants of Belize were the Maya and Carib Indians. Belize was a part of the great Mayan empire which stretched through Guatemala, southern Mexico and parts of Honduras and El Salvador. Though the history of the Maya can be traced back for over 4000 years, the Classic Period of more advanced Mayan civilization began around the 3rd century AD and reached its height between the 6th and 8th centuries. By the 14th century it was in serious decline. When the Spanish arrived in the 16th century, many of the Mayan cities were deserted. After WWII, Belize's economy weakened, leading to agitation for independence. Democratic political parties and institutions were formed and self-government was granted in 1964. The government decided to build a new capital at Belmopan in 1970, after Hurricane Hattie all but destroyed Belize City in 1961. Full independence became a reality in September 1981 when British Honduras officially became Belize. Guatemala, which had territorial claims on Belize, threatened war in 1972, but British troops were stationed in Belize to make sure the dispute remained purely diplomatic. During the volatile 1980s, Belize remained stable and pro-US, thanks predominantly to large influxes of US aid. In 1992, a new Guatemalan government recognized Belize's territorial integrity. The British garrison was withdrawn in 1994; Belize now has a standing army of only 550 soldiers. Since the fall of General Noriega in Panama, Belize has become a major transshipment point for cocaine heading into the US from South America. Illegal cultivation and smuggling of marijuana is also prevalent.

UM student exploring culture, history in Belize By Linda Chen Senior Staff Writer Elizabeth Johnson will have a chance to explore the jungles and coastlines of Belize as she continues her studies there. Johnson, a graduate student studying anthropology and sociology, is only one of 25 other students from the United States attending Belize's study abroad program. The program is organized by the American Universities International Program (AUIP), a nonprofit organization in Fort Collins, Colo. For 12 weeks Johnson is living and studying amidst the local people. She is travelling throughout Belize, a rather diverse country located in Central America. The students in Belize travel with local chefs and guides while living in tents on the keys and in the forests. She will also have an opportunity to interact with people from the the six cultures in Belize, according to AUIP's Coordinator Linda Thompson. "Professors from the U.S. and experts in their field from Belize also instruct the students," Thompson said. The students in Belize will visit Mayan cities which have been studied by scholars and the general public for centuries. Mayan cities are typically located deep in the jungle.

CULTURE HISTORY Belize was the center of the Mayan Civilization, which stretched north to Yucatan, west to Guatemala and El Salvador and south to Honduras. The Belize Old River served as a major trading route, with various important centers as Xunantunich, El Pilar, Cahal Pech and Altun Ha lining its banks. When the British settlers started to arrive in Belize, they formed the first capital at Saint Georges Caye and later moved it to the mouth of the Belize Old River, where the second capital was locate in Belize City. This was done primarily to be better located to take advantage of the river as a major economic link to the inland areas with abundant resources. This city was largely destroyed by hurricane Hattie in 1961, which was the basis for thinking about moving to the current capital city Belmopan, the prefix 'Bel' for Belize, and 'mopan' for the Mopan Maya communities which are predominantly from that central and western region of the country. The timber, logging and chicle era were responsible for the formation of most of the existing villages that line the river banks. Many of these villages have since shifted from the river banks to the highway side as that economic artery has become of more value as small farming has declined. English Francais UNESCO The Garifuna Language, Dance and Music Belize (supported by Honduras and Nicaragua) The traditions of the Garifuna people originated from descendants of African slaves rescued from Saint Vincent where they were exiled in the 17th century for fighting English and French domination. Communities in Belize, and on the coasts of Honduras, Guatemala and Nicaragua share a unique Garifuna culture. An estimated population of 11,500 live in 10 communities on the Atlantic coast and continue to speak the language - black Carib, which blends elements of the language spoken by the former inhabitants of Saint Vincent with African elements. Music and dance are central and vibrant aspects of the Garifuna communities. Traditional instruments including drums, maracas, guitars and turtle shells are used for religious and secular occasions.
