Polar Bear Science
Photo: WWF/Matt Finarelli The polar bear ( Ursus maritimus ) is the largest terrestrial carnivore. Adult males can measure more than nine feet in length and weigh between 770 to 1,430 pounds. The bear's body and neck are elongated, and the head is narrow and long with small, rounded ears. The polar bear's coat, covering it completely except for the nose and foot pads, is superbly adapted to Arctic environments. Along with a thick layer of body fat, the water-repellent coat insulates the bear from cold air and water. It also serves as camouflage; in fact, polar bears can sometimes pass as snow drifts. The fur is 95 percent efficient in converting ultra-violet sun rays into usable heat. Its transparent hairs have a hollow inner core which scatters ultra-violet light by some unknown mechanism, converting it into heat when it reaches the bear's black skin . Surprisingly, the fur has no white pigment; it is the reflection of the sun that causes the fur to appear white. Habitat and Distribution:
The five million square-mile range of the polar bear circles the Arctic. They live mainly in Canada and Greenland and on Norwegian and Russian islands, but they have been seen within 150 miles of the North Pole.

Polar Bears are large, meat-eating bears who are well-adapted for life in their frozen Arctic environment. They are powerful swimmers who hunt seals in the water. Polar bears can run in bursts up to 25 mph (40 kph). Females (called sows) build snow dens in which they give birth to twins. Male polar bears (called boars) do not hibernate. Anatomy : Polar Bears are up to 10 feet (30m) long and weigh 1,700 pounds (770 kg). These bears have a small head and a black nose. They have wide front paws with slightly webbed toes that help them swim. They paddle with the front feet and steer with the hind feet. Fur and Skin : Polar Bears have two types of fur. They have thick, woolly fur close to the skin that keeps them warm. They also have hollow guard hairs that stick up and protect the bears from getting wet. These guard hairs are like drinking straws and are clear-colored (not white). The white-looking coat camouflages them well in the snow and ice. Under the fur, Polar Bears have black skin. They also have a thick layer of fat under the skin that helps keep them warm. Diet : Polar Bears are fierce predators who eat mostly seals (and some walruses). They are carnivores (meat-eaters) who frequently hunt and catch their prey in the water, often many miles from land. Polar bears don't drink water.

Born Free's polar bear foster program - the perfect gift for just £20.00
Immense and powerful, the magical polar bear is supremely suited to life in the freezer. Polar bears are found in the cold and hostile Artic Circle, where thick white fur is a great camouflage and keeps the bears warm. The polar bear is the biggest of all the bear species. If you love polar bears, adoption makes a great gift, for yourself or someone you care for Until recently orphan polar bear cubs in Churchill, Canada - the polar bear capital of the world - faced a bleak future. Without their mother they would starve. Then Born Free met with Manitoba Conservation to develop a new way forward - the adoption of orphan cubs by wild surrogate mothers. When you adopt you will receive:
A personalised adoption certificate
A full-colour framed photo of the polar bear foster family
Regular Campaign Update news telling you how the polar bears are coming along
Adoption papers detailing the family's background.

guest book sign read about March 14, 2003: TJ is the man "Liberty is to the collective body what health is to every individual body. Without health, no pleasure can be tasted by man; without liberty, no happiness can be enjoyed by society." ~ Thomas Jefferson March 12, 2003: MUSH! The sled dogs are going crazy in Alaska! It's Iditarod time. I met some sled dogs on my Polar Bear trip. They are amazing animals. They are so excited to run they are practically doing backflips while they wait. As soon as the brake is off and they hear "Mush!" they stop barking, put their heads down and just GO! Update: The Norwegian, Robert Sorlie , won the 31st running of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race on March 13. On his heels (2 hours later - close in Iditarod time!) was Ramy Brooks who briefly took the lead with 24 hours to go - a valiant effort! Feb 24, 2003: Free Shoes! Thousands of Nike shoes are adrift in the Pacific Ocean after spilling from a container ship off Northern California. Now they are washing up on the shores of Alaska. Alas, they are not attached as pairs. But if you have 2 left feet of differing sizes, you may be in luck!

A symbol of America's wild lands, the grizzly bear is one of the largest North American land mammals. The grizzly bear's historic range covered much of North America from the mid-plains westward to California and from central Mexico north throughout Alaska and Canada. Today, the grizzly bear is found in only about 2 percent of its original range in the lower 48 states. Male Polar Bear Mother Polar Bear with Baby Polar Bear
