Orlando Vega's field goal came just after the game clock had expired. The victory, 103-101, gave Argentina a bronze medal and third place in this hemisphere. In a physical game in which three players fouled out, Argentina had a 31-17 free throw advantage. The tandem of Ginobili and Nocioni combined for 49 points and shot over 65 percent from the field. Jose Ortiz ended his Olympic career with a marvelous performance as he led his team in points(24), rebounds(10), and assists(5). Coach Julio Toro stated after the game that his players never quit and fought until the very end.

That’s Middle Tennessee University coach Andy McCollum, talking about the talent of 21-year-old Ben Gay , who, some say, could have played in the NFL straight out of high school. But Gay, who rushed for 4,640 yards as a prep in Texas, has played only briefly in junior college and the CFL, and his history since high school is, well, strange. Gay’s last chance may come at the NFL’s July 18 supplemental draft. WNBA
Lisa Leslie is the Sparks leading scorer, averaging over 16 points per game. Leslie leads the WNBA in rebounds with 9.4 average. "This is a great opportunity. I like that I can help to change people's perspectives about what women can and can't do. And when my playing days are over, I hope people will remember me as the most versatile center to ever play the game, man or woman."
    Olympic Athlete
The US Women's Basketball Olympic team took the Gold Medal in 1996. Over 30 thousand fans attended the sold out Olympic Women's Basketball games. Leslie scored a total of 156 points as a starter in all 8 games, averaging 19.5 points per game, made 28 of 44 free throws, rebounded 58 times with an average rebounding record of 7.3 per game. Leslie assisted her teammates 19 times and stole the ball 9 times from the opponents. The highlight (so far) of Leslie's basketball career was defeating the Brazilian Olympic team to earn the Gold Medal. Leslie states, "We accomplished what we set out to do. We tried to get women's basketball to the next level. Our game speaks for itself, but now our names are in the public eye and that's the thing that took the NBA from one level to the next."
    US National Team
Leslie played on the undefeated US National Team in 1996. The team played 52 games in preparation for the 1996 Olympics. She says, "I think the National Team is a opportunity for girls to get their VCR tapes out and record it and rewind it and watch it, and have that opportunity to fantasize about being like us."

Sports develops programs and materials to help coaches and other adults equip youth with values to meet life’s challenges, on and off the field. The main focus of CHARACTER COUNTS! Sports is the "Pursuing Victory With Honor" sportsmanship campaign. The campaign was inspired by a conference of the same name held in Scottsdale, Arizona in 1999. There, more than four dozen leading figures in American amateur athletics called for major reforms in the way sports are played, coached and watched. Participants at this conference — generously underwritten by and co-sponsored by the coaching division of the U.S. Olympic Committee — set forth 16 principles in the Arizona Sports Summit Accord The Accord continues to gain signatories, including: NCAA Division IA Athletic Directors Association, the National Association of Basketball Coaches, the American Football Coaches Association, the National Federation of State High School Associations and most of the nation’s Division IA collegiate athletic programs.

Women's Sports Progress Under Title IX; Women's Basketball Goes Pro
by Kathryn Lee Kemp, Women's Institute on Sport and Education, and Melinda Shelton Let 1996 go down in Olympic history as the Year of the Female Athlete. For the first time in modern Olympic history, women dominated both in events and worldwide recognition. More than 65,000 spectators crammed the stands to see the U.S. women claim a soccer gold medal, while thousands more experienced history as the U.S. claimed the first gold medal ever awarded in softball. And the Georgia Dome rocked with more than 35,000 fans many wearing jerseys emblazoned with their favorite female athlete's name and number who witnessed spectacular basketball as the U.S. swept by Brazil to win the gold medal. The U.S. sent the largest contingent of female athletes 287 and the 3,779 women competitors (out of 10,440 total) represented a 26 percent increase from the previous summer games in Barcelona, Spain. In fact, women in this year's games comprised 34.4 percent of the competitors, compared to 20.6 percent in Montreal's 1976 games. While most people understand the spirit behind Olympic events breaking down barriers many people are unaware of a law that has done just that for this country's female athletes. Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 states "no person in the U.S. shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, or denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving federal aid."
