    INTRODUCTION
Background: Bahrain's small size and central location among Persian Gulf countries require it to play a delicate balancing act in foreign affairs among its larger neighbors. Possessing minimal oil reserves, Bahrain has turned to petroleum processing and refining, and has transformed itself into an international banking center. The new amir is pushing economic and political reforms, and has worked to improve relations with the Shi'a community.

    GEOGRAPHY
Bahrain is culturally, politically and economically diverse. The Bahraini people as a whole are exceedingly courteous and welcome guests visiting their country. The Arab countries along the Arabian Gulf form a geographically and culturally distinct sub-entity. These countries also make up the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). The six member states are Kuwait, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E) and the Sultanate of Oman. The population is around 600,000 with the population heavily concentrated in the northern third of the main island and Muharraq. A trip to the National Museum and tourist site information available at the Rec. Center is recommended to get a feel for the country's history and to identify sites of potential interest for you to visit. There are several forts, outstanding museums, beaches and a wildlife sanctuary located on the island.
