When in public: don't back away when an Arab stands very close while speaking to you. They won't be more than two feet away. Arabs constantly stare into other peoples' eyes, however, a foreign man should never stare directly into a woman's eyes and when speaking to her or when passing on the street. He should avert his eyes or keep his eyes on the ground. Refrain from any expression of intimacy with a member of the opposite sex in public. Husbands and wives should avoid any displays of affections or intimacy, such as kissing, massaging each other's back, etc. Remember that the giving and receiving of favors are the basis of friendship. Arabs will always say "yes" when asked to do a favor, because they believe that one can never refuse a friend's request. If an Arab asks you for help or a favor, say that you will try. Your willingness to try is much more important then whether you ultimately succeed. If you later report that you were unsuccessful, your Arab friend won't expect a reason or ask for one. Realize that there is no concept of privacy in Arab culture. People will feel free to comment you on your weight, your marital status, and ask if you have children- if not, why? They may inquire about your salary and how much you paid for various things. Diplomacy and tact is needed to give an answer without disclosing personal information you wish to keep private.

As flashy and modern as central Manama may be, the basic rhythms of life in the island's many villages (and in parts of Manama itself) remain remarkably traditional. By the same token, where there's tradition in the Gulf there's Islamic conservatism: women cover themselves from head to foot and women travellers are expected to wear long skirts and one-piece bathing suits. Bahrain's population is 85% Muslim and Islam is the state religion. Arabic is the official language but English is widely spoken. Traditional craftwork continues in several places around Bahrain: dhows (fishing boats) are built on the outskirts of Manama and Muharraq, cloth woven at Bani Jamrah and pottery thrown at A'ali. A few goldsmiths still operate in the Manama souk, though a lot of the work is now done abroad. One of the mainstays of Bahraini culture is the drinking of traditional Arabian coffee. You can't go far without finding a coffee pot in a shop or a souk. Traditional Arabian street food like shawarma (lamb or chicken carved from a huge rotating spit and served in pita bread) and desserts such as baklava are also ubiquitous. While a bit thin on Arabic food, Bahrain has a bonanza of Indian, Pakistani, Thai and other Asian specialties.

Country Info Bahrain Introduction Bahrain General Data Bahrain Maps Bahrain Culture ... Bahrain Time and Date Bahrain Culture Back to Top In spite of its recent rapid economic development, Bahrain remains, in most respects, essentially Arab in its culture and lifestyle. The state radio and television stations broadcast mainly in Arabic; television transmissions are also received from Saudi Arabia. The traditional sports of falconry, gazelle and hare coursing, and horse and camel racing are still practiced by wealthier Bahrainis. Bahrain may have been under mainland Arab domination when Shapur II annexed it, together with eastern Arabia, into the Persian Sasanian empire in the 4th century AD. By the time of the Muslim conquest, in the 7th century, Bahrain was being governed for Persia by a Christian Arab; Syrian Christian records suggest Bahrain had its own Nestorian bishop. The 'Abbasids took Bahrain in the 8th century, and it remained under Arab control until 1521, when Portugal seized it. In 1602, after 80 years of unrest, the Persians took Bahrain and held it against assaults by the Portuguese and the Omanis. In 1783 Ahmad ibn Al Khalifah ousted the Persians, and his family has ruled Bahrain ever since.

Country Info Bahrain Introduction Bahrain General Data Bahrain Maps Bahrain Culture ... Bahrain Time and Date Bahrain History Back to Top Archaeological evidence indicates that Bahrain was inhabited at least 50,000 years ago. The inhabitants may have first practiced agriculture about 8,000 years ago. By about 4000 bc Bahrain was the center of the advanced Dilmun trading culture, which had connections with the civilizations of Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley (see Indus Valley Civilization). Dilmun seems to have been a federation of sorts that was centered on the Persian Gulf shore. It included parts of the Arabian mainland and traded with inland sections of what is now Saudi Arabia. Thus, early in its history, Bahrain established its character as a cosmopolitan commercial state, based on its location on major trade routes that passed through the Persian Gulf region. During the 19th century, Britain intervened several times to suppress piracy by the Bahrainis and to defeat attempts by neighbouring Arabs to assert dominion over the islands. In a series of treaties dating from 1820, Britain gained extensive control over Bahrain. After Britain's decision in 1968 to withdraw all forces from the Persian Gulf, Sheikh 'Isa ibn Sulman Al Khalifah proclaimed Bahrain independent in August 1971. After independence, tensions between the Shi'ite and Sunnite communities increased, and Shi'ite Muslims, emboldened by Iran's revolution in 1979, continued to press for greater participation in government.

    Bahrain's Delmon civilization
Bahrain, Culture, 5/21/1999 Archaeological excavations in Bahrain have started to unveil gradually the existence of an "unknown" civilization the island of Bahrain witnessed between 2500-1800 BC, which is actually the civilization of Delmon, the very historical name of Bahrain.
Chairman of the French expedition teams, Pierre Lumpar, said the people of Delmon used to build their tombs during their lifetime, adding that these tombs used to take the shapes of towers and the already discovered tombs in Bahrain are but the result of gradual collapse for these towers.
The French archaeologist added that excavation operations unearthed eight large cemeteries including between 170-200 tombs, a figure which amazed the European travellers in the 19th century who believed, at that time, that the island (Bahrain) was used as a collective grave since ancient times.
Lumpar, who is a researcher at the national center for scientific research in France, said, "If the people of Delmon were not digging tombs to bury their dead, this would had been eventually because the land is rocky."
