I have seen several questions on astrophotography for amateurs, and I was thinking that I could share my experience here. Of course, it will not replace books that one can find on the subject. I strongly recommend "Astrophotography for the Amateur" (Michael Covington) as the book to own if you want to start in this field. Everything described here is from my own experience, and covers only the basics of astrophotography. I am still far away from Fletcher and Hallas, but I enjoy what I do. I tried to explain my own evolution, from simple picture of the sky to prime focus one. It is not the only way, but it helps to practice the basics before going to long focal deepsky astrophotography.
1) GET STARTED: PHOTO ON TRIPOD
Before even starting with photography with a telescope, I recommend to practice photography using a simple tripod. There are many things to do with a simple tripod: Moon and Planets at dawn or dusk: choose a nice foreground landscape (trees, mountains...). Evening just after the New Moon are very nice for that. Full Moon set above cities are very nice too. I usualy use a 100-400ASA slide film. Constellations: Using a fast film (I like the Kodak Ektar 1000) and short exposures (30"-45" for a 50mm lens), one can record a lot of details on constellations. I got some nice results on the Milky way, especialy around Sagittarius. Those pictures are also a perfect test for the photo shop: is the sky coming black from their lab?

The following astronomical images were taken in Maine and Maryland with an Olympus OM-1 camera, Nikon N2000 camera and a 16-inch, f/4.5 Meade Starfinder Newtonian Reflector telescope. Images will be added as they are obtained. NEBULAE Interstellar clouds of gas and dust. Nebulae include the remnants of supernova explosions of stars, expanding shells of gas blown off from dying stars, and regions of new star formation. REVIEW ARTICLE: "SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS FOR VIDEO ASTRONOMY"
Supercircuits recently introduced a new low light video surveillance camera head, the PC164C, which uses a very sensitive Sony Super HAD EXview CCD video chip. The extreme sensitivity of the camera, rated at 0.0003 lux, allows the use of larger image scale when imaging the planets resulting in higher resolution images. A 25cm Newtonian @ f/30 was used to image Saturn and a 15cm Maksutov-Cassegrain at f/50 for Jupiter. VIDEO CAPTURE ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY
As seeing conditions at my suburban home in Livermore, California are always turbulent I have adopted the use of video for my astrophotography. From the very first images made back in 1999, I was producing results several orders of magnitude better than the best film photos I had ever taken of the moon and planets through a scope. All of the images on this web site were made from video, either with an Astrovid 2000 video camera or Supercircuits' PC23C, PC33C or PC164C video surveillance cameras using a 25cm f/6 Newtonian or 15cm f/10 Maksutov-Cassegrain. Prime focus, Barlow projection or eyepiece projection were utilized to vary image scale (magnification). Video was recorded to a Hi8 camcorder and individual frames were captured to computer with a Snappy frame grabber. Image processing with Adobe Photo Shop. All imaging was done from my suburban driveway in Livermore CA. Be sure to check out some of my other pages and see more planetary and lunar images captured with video. A BASIC PRIMER ON ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY
© 1997 By: Jim Pennington It was said by a good friend of mine that astrophotographers are masochists. In a sense, I suppose he is correct. Astrophotography can test one's patience and dedication to the limits and at the same time be both satisfying and rewarding. Photographing the night sky can be done by anyone if they are willing to put forth the time and effort in learning the nuances of this hobby. Equipment requirements range from nothing but a simple camera and tripod to a multi- thousand dollar computer controlled telescope equipped with a CCD autoguider and seperate guidescope. I suppose the greatest allure of astrophotography is the challenge to be successful at it. As I mentioned above, it is not impossible to learn but neither is it easy. Going outside and hand holding a camera on the stars will not work. A bit of preparation and knowing what you are doing is essential for success.

Rigid Camera Mountings
Tripod mounted cameras are limited to relatively short exposures of 15 seconds or less and a lens of no more than 100mm focal length is recommended. The reason for this is that longer focal length lenses produce less field of view on the film and therefore more magnification. As magnification goes up, we start running into the problem of "trailing" of the stars due to the earth's rotation and the apparent movement of the stars across the sky. The stars will no longer appear to be "dots" but will begin to resemble streaks which will get longer if the magnification goes up or the exposure time increases.
