DIWALI The Festival of Lights Diwali is a traditional festival celebrated throughout South Asia. Known also as the Festival of Lights, it is a joyous time when all of South Asia glows as brightly as the oil lamps lit to celebrate the New Year. It is a time when people forgive their enemies and embrace their families in hopes of a good year. Many pray to various gods and goddesses for wealth and luck in the New Year. This is a festival that transcends all regional differences as South Asia celebrates as one. Masala-SACE annually shares an unforgettable Diwali night with the Vanderbilt campus. The evening commences with a spicy and delicious Indian dinner, catered by a local restaurant. The traditional Indian meal is followed by a cultural program in which SACE members show off their talents. The program consists of dances, skits, songs, and, the finale, a fashion show. A dance party culminates the night. Diwali ’98 was a huge success, the best Diwali Vanderbilt has ever seen! The acts keep getting better each year with this year’s 550-person audience mesmerized from the introductory candle dance to the final fashion show formation. Congratulations to all who made Diwali ’98 the awesome night that it was, and thank you to all in the Vanderbilt community who supported SACE. The following links are to pages with additional information on Diwali.

Landowner's arrest brings new leads
By Cecily Burt
STAFF WRITER
BERKELEY Like police predicted, South Asian community hot lines lit up Thursday after news broke that Lakireddy Bali Reddy was charged with importing minor girls from India for cheap labor and illegal sexual activity.
Reddy, 62, the owner of Pasand Madras Cuisine on Shattuck Avenue and several other commercial and residential properties in Berkeley, is scheduled for arraignment today in U.S. District Court in Oakland.
He faces charges of importing aliens for the purpose of prostitution or other immoral purposes, and of obtaining fraudulent skilled worker claims to help Indian citizens enter the United States.
On Wednesday, police asked other victims or anyone with information to step forward. And call they did.
Some said they knew someone who might be a victim, said Firoza Dabby, executive director of NARIKA, a South Asian women's organization in the East Bay that received close to a dozen calls. Others offered legal assistance. Still others, including Reddy tenants, called to relay something they had observed and to say their suspicions had been confirmed. People of all cultural backgrounds expressed shock and outrage over the news. Reddy's lawyer, Ted Cassman, and son, Vijay Lakireddy, said the charges would be proved false.

Sanil P. Thomas Bangalore, Calcutta, Delhi and Patiala
The philosophy of sports has undergone a sea change since the inaugural New Delhi Asian Games in 1951. No one believes that participation is more important than winning. But not the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). For all their lofty pronouncements that only medal prospects would go to Bangkok, the powers-that-be are on their way for a compromise with the federations.
Slippery customers: The kabbadi team, looking for its third successive Asian Games gold, practising in Patiala
By making Vijay Kumar Malhotra senior IOA vice-president, president Suresh Kalmadi has shown his ability to win 'friends'. Now the IOA can pull strings in the government to clear the jumbo contingent. And then?
The same old story all over again. In Hiroshima 1994 there were 206 Indians in 16 disciplines thanks to the Games village authorities who sent a few who arrived late packing. The medal tally read four gold, three silver and 16 bronze.
This time too it will be a picnic for many. Nayeemuddin, the chief coach of the football team training in Calcutta, spoke well-rehearsed lines about the team's chances if they are given government clearance: "The boys will come back with their heads high." But he conceded that the players are short of international exposure. The captain was yet to be announced in the third week of November; none of the players knew much about the fixtures.

Simmering in the Asian Melting Pot
    Map of where we are.
In downtown Singapore, smartly dressed Asians wondered through the myriad of glass malls, trendy restaurants and chic boutiques. As in the United States, shopping and eating seemed the most popular past times. Unlike the rest of the countries Will and I have traveled through, Singapore was excruciatingly expensive. With a bank account approaching red, we ate rather than shopped our way through the small city-state. Underneath the hygienic globalized veneer, we discovered Singapore's nooks and crannies were filled with tasty surprises. Between Little India and Chinatown there existed an incredibly diverse mix of everything Asian. Click to Enlarge. Located at the very tip of peninsular Malaysia, Singapore has been a focal point for South East Asian commerce since Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles claimed the murky swamp as an English colonial outpost in 1819. Since then, Chinese, Indians, Malays, Europeans and other groups have made their home in the prosperous entrepot. Click to Enlarge.

Punjabi slugfest puts Southall in spotlight
Shyam Bhatia India Abroad Correspondent in London The roar of two Punjabi politicians slugging it out in a London constituency has overshadowed the other 54 South Asian candidates competing for seats in the forthcoming British general election. Never before has there been such Asian interest in a British parliamentary constituency as there is in the battle being fought between Labour Party standard-bearer Piara Khabra and radio station owner Avtar Lit, an independent, who claims to represent the true interests of Punjabis settled round London's Heathrow airport. The two have been at personal loggerheads ever since they announced their rival candidacies for this key constituency. "The Labour Party's view is that we don't consider the independents a serious threat at all," Khabra told
