Asian-Americans’ long history in U.S. military

CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. (ACCNS) I can recall a conversation with a young man at a store some time ago. I had recently been commissioned in the Air Force. When I asked him if he worked in the local area, he said, “I work on base.” He was apparently an active-duty military member. When he asked me where I worked, I replied, “I work on base as well.” But before I could finish my response, he quipped, “Oh, so you work at the BX.”
There are many Asian-Americans who work in the civilian sector on base and provide a valuable service to military people and their families. Despite what some people might think, there are also many Asian-American citizens who dedicate their lives to the United States through military service.
Before I joined the military, I told a man in a business office that I was born in the Philippines and my family and I immigrated to America when I was 13. He was proud to say he was stationed in the Philippines when he was in the military and knew a great deal about the country.
Then he said, “You speak good English.”

Photo Caption: Intelligence personnel of the 2d Infantry Division question a captured Korean guerilla. October 1950 Background: World War II Substantial numbers of Asian-Americans served in America's armed forces during World War II, but the total number is unknown. Some 25,000 Japanese-Americans had proved their loyalty in uniform. More than 6,000 Nisei (first-generation, American-born Japanese) trained as interpreters and translators at the Army's Military Intelligence Service (MIS) Language School in Minnesota and 3,700 MIS linguists served in combat. The U.S. Army's 442d Regimental Combat Team (RCT), comprised of about 4,500 Japanese-Americans, fought heroically in Italy and Central Europe. The unit received more than 18,000 individual decorations and seven Presidential Unit Citations. More than 20,000 Chinese Americans served in the armed forces, many as integrated members of Army units. Smaller numbers of Filipino-Americans and Korean-Americans formed small units for the nation's war effort. Numbers Served and Their Jobs Unlike in World War II when there was the Japanese-American 442d RCT, there were no separate Asian-American units during the Korean War. The Department of the Army dropped the designation "Asian-American" after World War II, so even an approximate number for the Korean War has not been determined. But the National Japanese-American Historical Society has estimated that 5,000 Nisei served in Korea with American forces and concluded that 213 of them lost their lives. Several units did remain predominantly Asian-American like the 100th Battalion, 442d Infantry, U.S. Army Reserve and the 5th Regimental Combat Team, both from Hawaii.

Never Never re-arm Japan. That's the worst idea I've heard on this website.
Milly
Cyn, did you used to work at one of those virtual reality arcades - Battletech? Actually, given how China has been behaving recently, I don't know that it's such a bad idea to re-arm Japan. No, Japan isn't always the most trustworthy of nations, but they do not trust China, nor does China trust Japan. I think everyone will be better off if their mutual distrust can be played off each other. To the person saying the US and Japan don't want asian union. Then why did the USA denounce the books? Cyn I've heard Japan is talking about expanding it's military. I pray this isn't true. Especially given their refusal to change their schoolbooks this year!

    American Force Press Service
WASHINGTON (AFPN) Twenty-one Asian-American World War II heroes are scheduled to have their wartime Distinguished Service Crosses upgraded to Medals of Honor during White House ceremonies June 21. Seven of the 21 recipients are still living. They are: Rudolph B. Davila of Vista, Calif.; Barney F. Hajiro of Waipahu, Hawaii; Shizuya Hayashi of Pearl City, Hawaii; U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye of Honolulu, Hawaii; Yeiki Kobashigawa of Hawaii (city not available); Yukio Okutsu of Hilo, Hawaii; and George T. Sakato of Denver. The Distinguished Service Cross was conferred on 11 of the heroes posthumously. The remaining three have died since the war. President Bill Clinton approved the Army's recommendations for the upgrades on May 12. Nineteen of the 21 veterans were members of the all-Japanese 100th Infantry Battalion or 442nd Regimental Combat Team for their size, among the most highly decorated units in U.S. military history. The 100th, comprising mostly Japanese American National Guardsmen from Hawaii, was the first all Japanese-American combat unit. While the 442nd was being formed in 1943, the 100th Battalion was already fighting in Italy. The 100th merged into the 442nd in 1944 and became the regiment's first battalion, though it retained its unit designation.

If the school does not compile these statistics, I ask them for: the total number of applicants, the number accepted, the total number of Asian- American applicants, and the number of Asian- American applicants accepted. See letter The military academies and Washington & Lee usually reply. Even though the number of Asian-American students at these schools is below the average for the 25 most selective colleges, their admission statistics indicate they probably are not discriminating against Asian- Americans. By law, the military academies must accept students from all 50 states. Please note that "conservatives" run these schools. However, the percentage of Asian-American students among the student bodies at the following schools has consistently been below the average for the 25 most selective colleges. They also do not produce statistics showing that they are admitting Asian- American applicants at a rate commensurate with the number of Asian-American applicants and their SAT scores and grades. Please note that "liberals" run these schools.
