"Silhouettes" Mary Harrison;
Classroom Teacher Using A Student As A Model... "Basically, you place a white art sheet about A3 size onto a wall, make sure it is placed at the exact height of your student's head. Next the student stands sideways in front of the sheet. The teacher now turns on the overhead projector, which is facing the student, about a meter or so away. As you will see, the shadow or portrait of the student now appears on the white art paper. Next a fellow student ,or in the case of younger children, the teacher, draws the outline of the students portrait on the art paper. The said student now paints his/her portrait in, in black. The result is very dramatic and we have had great fun with visitors to our classroom, guessing which child matches which portrait. The students loved it! I first learned of portraits in college." The Art of Forgery Cathy, Middle School Teacher
: Pittsburgh, PA "The Super Duper Class Portrait" Lisa Kunrow : Queens Anne Liberty School "As a class, I have students create a drawing. I usually have students take turns going up to the board and give them 30 seconds to draw something (once they get the chalk). Once the person is done, the next student picks up where they left off. You can ask students to create pictures of anything (appropriate, of course.) If you want to make it harder, add a theme. Tell students to draw an animal or place. It's really neat to see everyone's perspective."

THE ARTS
TOWEL VOLLEYBALL
GRADES: 7-12
I always have my eyes open for active ways to illustrate concepts such as team work, cooperation, and other ideas we explore in my communications class. This simple game is a good opener for a unit on group dynamics or a good game for theater classes to work on cooperation.
MATERIALS:
  • 2 large towels (beach towels are excellent)
  • an inflatable beach ball
  • a net of some kind
  • a bracket for placing teams
METHOD:
  • Divide class into teams of two
  • Have each group place their name on the first line of a playoff bracket, arranged so winners will play winners until one champion is determined.
  • If there is an odd number, have the extra person be an observer to look for the most effective "team players."
  • Set up a playing area. I move my class to our large foyer, have two students hold a length of adding machine tape at should level for the net, and designate out of bounds by placing trash cans or something similar.
  • Each person on a team holds two corners of the towel, creating a sling for the ball. The ball is launched and caught back and forth across the net without using hands; just the towel is used. A team wins by scoring three points. A team scores a point when the other side is unable to return the ball.
  • Play until everyone has played, or continue playing along the bracket, single-elimination style.

Advice for Teachers Indigenous Issues Indigenous Art - Kutjungka
'Visit' the galleries of men's and women's paintings on the CD-ROM. Choose one of the paintings hanging in one of the galleries. Think about what it is that has attracted you to making your choice. Click on the magnifying glass near the top right hand corner of the painting. 'Explore' the painting by moving slowly across the surface of the canvas (click and hold your mouse on the painting and drag). Note the artist's use of colour and design and consider how these work together in this painting. Study the map of the painting. Return to the canvas to identify each of the elements. Read the biography of the artist. Repeat these steps for each of the art works in each of the galleries. Read the texts Art in Balgo and Reading the Works . What understandings have you now come to about the art of this region? Develop your understanding of Indigenous Art by consulting some of the works listed in Additional Resources on the CD-ROM under Kutjungka and Discovery Indigenous Art includes not just paintings, but traditional artefacts. Ten of these are depicted and described in the Discovery Game on the CD-ROM. See if you can locate them!
