Boulder Valley Ditches: A History and Guide Irrigation in Boulder
Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr., 1910 Within the city of Boulder, Colorado, in addition to two year-round creeks and a handful of intermittent ones, there are twenty-three other waterways that flow half the year. These are irrigation ditches, bringing water through the city on its way to fields, pastures, orchards and gardens. The 30 miles of ditches make up most of the system of watercourses in Boulder. Laterals - little side ditches - carried water to every house in many neighborhoods: from Anderson Ditch to Highland Lawn, from Farmers Ditch to downtown, and later from Silver Lake Ditch to Mapleton Avenue and North Boulder. In 1872, the Boulder Aqueduct Company was organized to distribute Farmers Ditch water through wooden pipes; it is not clear whether the company ever delivered any water. The aqueduct company was superseded a few years later by a municipal system, but the street laterals continued alongside it for decades. Households needed water all the time, so in early years the ditches ran year-round, except a brief spring shut-off for cleaning and an occasional winter cold spell when the channels froze solid. At those times, Mapleton Hill children used Farmers Ditch for ice skating. During cold months, the laterals froze first, and then some Boulderites had to carry household water from the main ditches.

Architecture New Stone Age During the New Stone Age the Greeks built small houses or huts. They built wooden walls around them for protection. By the end of the Stone Age the houses were bigger with stone walls around the village. Bronze Age By the Early Bronze Age the villages were built around one big house. This central house was not only bigger, but fancier with stone walls. By the Late Bronze Age the Greeks begin to build palaces and big stone tombs. The roads were paved. Bridges and dams were built as well. Greek Dark Ages During the Greek Dark Ages the palaces were burned. The roads, bridges, and dams were not maintained and begin to deteriorate. By the end of the Dark Ages the Greeks begin to build temples to the gods. The roads, bridges, and stone walls were repaired. Classical Period By the time the Classical Period begin the Greeks begin to build bigger temples and new designs. Building temples was a new concept for the Greeks. They probably got the idea from the Egyptians, who had been building temples for thousands of years. The first Greek temples were built around 800 B. C. They were made of wood. The design was a long rectangular building with a porch all the way around them supported by columns which were made of tree trunks.

"This stately and haunting collection of large-format black-and-white photographs reveals the city's hidden and, in many places, crumbling or decrepit infrastructure: a vault beneath the Brooklyn Bridge, once rented to a wine merchant for champagne storage; weed-encrusted Nike missile silos adjoining Potter's Field, on Hart Island; the massive remains of the West Side piers, rotting into the Hudson. Alongside these images, even the newly functional attic space above the ceiling in Grand Central Terminal (where the bulbs inside the constellations get changed) and the nuclear-blast-resistant water tunnel still under construction beneath the Bronx take on an Ozymandian melancholy."

Architecture (cont.)
The new chapter which was opened in the Islamic period led to the creation of remarkable religious buildings. Iranian arts such as calligraphy, stucco, mirror work, and mosaic work, became closely tied together in this new era. Islamic architecture and building decoration are among the most beautiful means of expression. Decoration does not play such an important role in any other type of architecture. The archaeological excavations have provided sufficient documents in support of the impacts of Sasanian architecture on the architecture of Islamic period. According to a classification suggested by Zaki Mohammad Hossain, the fourth period of Iranian architecture (from 15 through 17 Centuries) is the most brilliant period. Various structures such as mosques, mausoleums, bazaars, bridges, and different palaces have mainly survived from this period. In the old Iranian architecture, semi-circular and oval-shaped vaults appeared and Iranians showed their extraordinary skill in making massive domes. Domes can be seen mainly in the structure of bazaars and mosques, and particularly in the historic buildings of Isfahan. Iranian domes are distinguished for their height, proportion of elements, beauty of form, and roundness of the dome stem. The outer surfaces of the domes are mostly mosaic faced, and create a magical view. According to Dr. D. Huff, a German archaeologist, the dome, similar to Iran itself, is the dominant element in Persian architecture. This statement, applies fully to Iranian architecture; because when one looks at lrano-lslamic buildings, huge halls and massive domes are the first elements which immediately attract one's attention. The art of tile work used to decorate all sorts of ivans, domes, and portals, is so interesting that each part of it seems, to be a magnificent piece of painting.

Architecture
"The meaningful Impact of Persian architecture Is versatile. New overwhelming and dignified, magnificent and impressive, charmingly fairy. like."; A.U. Pope
Persian architecture can be considered through the age-old history of the land. It goes back to the late 6th and early 5th millennia BC Persian architecture has been a comprehensive embodiment of Iranian psychology and characteristics in different historical periods. In studying Persian architecture four distinc, protracted, but continuous periods are distinguished, as follows:
  • Persian prehistoric architecture till the formation of the first national governmet by the Medes. Persian architecture from the Medes period till the end of Sassanians. Islamic period architecture till the end of Safavi period. Contemporary and present-day Persian architecture.
  • In connection with the present review of Persian architecture, the reader is reminded of a varying range of other arts applied by the inhabitants of Iran to decorate their different constructions. In short, such arts are: stone carving, stucco carving and plaster work, painting, tile work, brick work, mirror glasswork, honey comb work, mosaic work, and several other ornamental arts. On the other hand, one has to consider the exceptional multiformity of buildings in terms of design and application. This diversity has arisen as a result of particular requirements and the rich tastes of Iranian artists through different periods of history.

TACOMA GORGE INN BOLA completed an adaptive use evaluation of the 7,220 sq. ft. Gorge Inn for Seattle City Light in 2000. The Gorge Inn is located in the historic company town of Newhalem and associated with the history of the dams and power generation at the Skagit River Hydroelectric Project.
Constructed in 1920, the building originally served as the Mess Hall and Kitchen facility for the crews working on the construction of the Skagit River dams. In the mid 1920s, with the advent of public tours of the Skagit Project, public visitors along with the workers, gathered at the “Cookhouse” for three hearty meals a day. Changes in the operation of dam sites prompted the building's closure in the late 1970s.
The first phase of the adaptive use planning included a building evaluation and recommendations for immediate and long term maintenance with an estimated construction cost of $360,700. The second phase involved a market analysis for the building and surrounding facilities. Schematic plans and cost estimates were prepared for three selected schemes. The adaptive use concept was estimated at approximately $600,000.
