23. The ANTS Load Balancing System
Source code and documentation.
http://unthought.net/antsd/
The ANTS Load Balancing System
Current version: 0.4.11 - October 1st, 2001
What ?
The ANTS Load Balancing System is a piece of software that will allow jobs to be executed on computers connected in a network (eg. a Beowulf). The node best suited (at the time of execution) for the job given, will be chosen to execute the job.
This is an approach different from that of traditional Queue systems. A job is not queued, it is executed immediately if any suitable host (for the given job type) can be found. This makes the system suitable for execution of a large number of small jobs, such as compilers. A traditional queue system will often take up too much time managing it's queues, to allow tasks such as large-scale compilations to gain much speedup using it.
How and Where ?
While I originally built this software in my spare time, it was built for and is further maintained by my employer, Evalesco Systems ApS , the maker of the SysOrb Monitoring System The software is distributed under the terms GNU Public License. Get the software here: antsd-0.4.10.tar.gz

glAnts - This project is a combination game and simulation that will allow you to interact with simple artificial ants. Once you provoke them, they will send fire ants out to protect the nest. You will be able to use the maze environment to plan or run I finally added some game coding documentation, it is not all in one place but it is a lot of code to play with. • Sept 28, 2002 - Finished the menu, added some misc screens. Fullscreen works. Moving to linux now, wish me luck. Sept 25, 2002 - Added menu and some more controls, nothing special Sept 14, 2002 - Revamped the system, added a more game look. Collision detection is not 100% but you have something. ANTS IV General Information
The 4th Algorithmic Number Theory Symposium (ANTS IV) will take place in Leiden in the Netherlands the summer of the year 2000. Arrival day: Sunday July 2. The end of the conference is on Friday July 7 at 3 PM. ANTS IV will be hosted by the Mathematical Institute and the Lorentz Center of the Universiteit Leiden The ANTS conferences, which are held every two years, are devoted to algorithmic aspects of number theory, including elementary number theory, algebraic number theory, analytic number theory, geometry of numbers, algebraic geometry, finite fields, cryptography and computational complexity. ANTS III was held in 1998 at Reed College, Portland, Oregon.
Local transportation
Leiden is located 25 kilometers south west of Amsterdam Airport (Schiphol). The airport is on top of a railway station having train connections to Leiden that are frequent (4 to 6 times an hour) and fast (20 minutes travel time). The Leiden railway station is walking distance from downtown Leiden, which is only a small area. You can also get a taxi at the railway station. The campus is a 20 minute walk in the other direction from the railway station and there is a bus every 30 minutes. The easiest way to get around between campus, downtown and the hotels is what all the locals do: ride a bicycle. You can rent bikes at the train station. Walking or using public transportion are also good options. There is no need to rent a car.

27. SFI Home Page
SFI draws scientists from universities and research institutions worldwide to pursue broad research problems. Much of the work focuses on the science of complexity (emergence), which examines underlying patterns and regularities behind a wide assortment of real-world phenomena. Projects range from the communication patterns of ants to the way information spreads across economic markets.

Since its founding SFI has devoted itself to creating a new kind of scientific research community, pursuing emerging science. Operating as a small, visiting institution, SFI seeks to catalyze new collaborative, multidisciplinary projects that break down the barriers between the traditional disciplines, to spread its ideas and methodologies to other individuals and encourage the practical applications of its results.

Ants As Pets The Ant (Hymenoptera in groups can make great pets. Many people consider the ant a pest before thinking of them as pets. Ants are a big part of ecology and anyone wanting to take the time to build an art farm soon realizes the socialization of these insects and the role they play. Some History The intelligence of the ant society-the tactics of the fighters and the husbandry of the farmers-is achieved through the social act of a sort of kiss called trophallaxis. During the kiss one or both of the ants gives the other a taste of the chemicals it has in its crop. The crop is a special community organ separate from the individual's digestive stomach. Its a kind of chemical language. The Chemicals stored in it are complex mixtures, modified by each kiss but originating mainly in secretions given off by the larvae and eggs in the colony. The composition of the mixture constitutes a chemical message which acts on the simple hereditary nervous system of an ant to communicate the needs and excitements of its society and tell the insect what it should be doing. All ant societies are divided into three castes: queens that found new colonies and thereafter function as egg-laying machines; winged males that take nuptial flight once with a queen, fertilizing her for life, then die; runt sterile females that lead tirelessly neuter lives that perform a variety of tasks. Some act as nurses, some as housekeepers, while others act as hunters and soldiers.

Select one of the thumbnail photographs of ants, bees and wasps below to access the descriptive record for this insect. Members of the Order Hymenoptera are charcterized by two pairs of membranous wings, clubbed antennae and chewing mouthparts. A good number possess a contricted "waist" between their thorax and abdomen. Ants, bees and wasps have evolved societal cooperation and are some of the finest natural architects, making extensive use of hexagonal forms.

FIRE ANTS The imported fire ant is unique because it is a pest in both urban and rural areas. These ants directly affect people, animals, and plants (crops). Furthermore, the ants cause indirect problems through their effects on the industrial and commercial infrastructure and the ecosystem. Damage estimates for the U.S. range from millions to billions of dollars annually across the imported fire ant's range. In Texas alone, an estimate based on the best available information was $300 million annually. A recent veterinary survey provided evidence that the beef cattle industry alone suffered losses estimated at $67 million. Hundreds of millions of dollars are spent annually for control of the fire ant.

YES, in January 2003 Pulu and I spent the first week mopping, sweeping, washing down the walls, putting up coats of paint and generally doing a lousy job of it. In the end the room finally opened and ANTS has moved to town.
Our new office is at the Tungi Arcade and two months after opening TCC was kind enough to finally move our phone lines. "

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT ANTS Like all insects, ants have six legs. Each leg has three joints. The legs of the ant are very strong so they can run very quickly. If a man could run as fast for his size as an ant can, he could run as fast as a racehorse. Ants can lift 20 times their own body weight. An ant brain has about 250 000 brain cells. A human brain has 10,000 million so a colony of 40,000 ants has collectively the same size brain as a human. The average life expectancy of an ant is 45-60 days. Ants use their antenae not only for touch, but also for their sense of smell. The head of the ant has a pair of large, strong jaws. The jaws open and shut sideways like a pair of scissors. Adult ants cannot chew and swallow solid food. Instead they swallow the juice which they squeeze from pieces of food. They throw away the dry part that is left over. The ant has two eyes, each eye is made of many smaller eyes. They are called compound eyes. The abdomen of the ant contains two stomachs. One stomach holds the food for itself and second stomach is for food to be shared with other ants. Like all insects, the outside of their body is covered with a hard armour this is called the exoskeleton. Ants have four distinct growing stages, the egg, larva, pupa and the adult. Biologists classify ants as a special group of wasps. (Hymenoptera Formicidae) There are over 10000 known species of ants. Each ant colony has at least one or more queens.
