Anorexia Nervosa What is anorexia nervosa?
Anorexia nervosa is an illness that usually occurs in teenage girls, but it can also occur in teenage boys, and adult women and men. People with anorexia are obsessed with being thin. They lose a lot of weight and are terrified of gaining weight. They believe they are fat even though they are very thin. Anorexia isn't just a problem with food or weight. It's an attempt to use food and weight to deal with emotional problems. What is the difference between anorexia and bulimia? People with anorexia starve themselves, avoid high-calorie foods and exercise constantly. People with bulimia eat huge amounts of food, but they throw up soon after eating, or take laxatives or diuretics (water pills) to keep from gaining weight. People with bulimia don't usually lose as much weight as people with anorexia. Warning signs of anorexia
  • Deliberate self-starvation with weight loss
  • Fear of gaining weight
  • Refusal to eat
  • Denial of hunger
  • Constant exercising
  • Greater amounts of hair on the body or the face
  • Sensitivity to cold temperatures
  • Absent or irregular periods
  • Loss of scalp hair
  • A self-perception of being fat when the person is really too thin
Why do people get anorexia?

Introducing Anorexia Nervosa Dr Peter Rowan MBBS.MRCPsych.
General Features
Anorexia Nervosa is an illness that mainly affects adolescent girls although it can occur both in boys or girls younger or older than this. The most common features are loss of weight coupled with a change in behaviour. The weight loss is slowly progressive and often starts with a perfectly normal weight reducing diet. It may only be after this has continued for several months that it seems a cause for worry, usually because by then the weight loss is extreme. To start with the girls are single minded in their determination to lose weight. Attempts to frustrate their efforts are generally met with anger or deceit or a combination of both. Confrontation, rational discussion, bullying or bribery will probably fail to cause more than a very brief change of eating behaviour. Continuing weight loss will lead to increasing concern by the family. A girl of average height will probably be unable to continue at school once her weight falls below around six stones. The personality changes that she may experience will be those of increasing seriousness and introversion. She will become less outgoing and less fun. She will usually begin to lose contact with her friends and may appear to lose interest in everything apart from food and academic work. She may show increased obsessional behaviour especially in the kitchen where she may become concerned with cleanliness, orderliness and precise timing of meals. She may well seem to wish to cook for the family and appear to encourage them to overeat. She will regress and appear to lose confidence. She may become less assertive, less argumentative and more dependant. At the same time her behaviour will increasingly control the lives of all around her.

What Is Anorexia?
Anorexia is an eating disorder where people starve themselves. Anorexia usually begins in young people around the onset of puberty. Individuals suffering from anorexia have extreme weight loss. Weight loss is usually 15% below the person's normal body weight. People suffering from anorexia are very skinny but are convinced that they are overweight. Weight loss is obtained by many ways. Some of the common techniques used are excessive exercize, intake of laxatives and not eating. Anorexics have an intense fear of becoming fat. Their dieting habits develop from this fear. Anorexia mainly affects adolescent girls. People with anorexia continue to think they are overweight even after they become extremely thin, are very ill or near death. Often they will develop strange eating habits such as refusing to eat in front of other people. Sometimes the individuals will prepare big meals for others while refusing to eat any of it.

Abandoned Beliefs Recovering From Anorexia
I expect to pass through this world but once; any good thing therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now; let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again. Stephan G. Rellet
Abandoned Beliefs is my offering to those suffering with anorexia. It is my sincere hope that sharing my recovery will lend support to those who seek it. Recovery is a process that often feels unbearable; I acknowledge this. However, the torture of anorexia is equally unbearable. The difference is this: Struggling through recovery yeilds gifts: the disovery of self, peace and contentment. Anorexia's only offering is imprisonment and deathof heart, of soul, of self. There is an incredible sense of peace and freedom awaiting those who bravely endure the trials of recovery. I know, for peace fills my life each dayI am free!
Whether you are beginning or are in the midst of your journey, I wish you success in discovering your sense of self and aquiring the knowledge that you are a special, lovable human being deserving of happiness. I wish you freedom.

    Inleiding

Anorexia nervosa is a life-threatening eating disorder defined by a refusal to maintain body weight within 15 percent of an individual's minimal normal weight. Other essential features of this disorder include an intense fear of gaining weight, a distorted body image, and amenorrhea (absence of at least three consecutive menstrual cycles when otherwise expected to occur) in women. Sometimes people starve and binge-purge, depending on the extent of weight loss. This can be physically very dangerous. People who present an on-going preoccupation with food and weight even at lesser weight reductions would benefit from exploring their cognitive and relationship skills. The term anorexia literally means loss of appetite, but this isn't a true symptom of the disorder. In fact, people with anorexia are usually hungry, but they control their eating. This is frequently sublimated through cooking for others or hiding food in their personal space which they will not eat. Who develops anorexia?

Hello! Welcome to my webpage. Let me begin by introducing myself to you. My name is Judy Sargent. I am 35 years old and a recovered anorexic. I suffered from severe anorexia nervosa for 10 years, was hospitalized 26 times, and landed myself in intensive care units on multiple occasions. You would never guess any of these things looking at me today. Right now, I am a registered nurse with a Master of Science Degree in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing. I have just begun Doctoral Studies in Nursing at a major university. In my spare time, I have written a book about my descent into anorexia and the subsequent recovery process. My book is titled, "The Long Road Back: A Survivor's Guide to Anorexia." I wrote the book with the hope that it will offer individuals currently suffering from an eating disorder, family members, friends, and therapists insight, compassionate understanding, and hope. My book provides a hopeful and uplifting journey through the recovery process. The links provided below will assist you in finding helpful information. Thank you for visiting this site.

and Atypical eating disorders in males Anorexia was first described in males by both Morton (57) and Gull (58). Anorexia in males accounted for approximately six percent of cases seen in an eating disorder clinic (38,59). Anorexia may be underdiagnosed because many physicians, as well as the anorectics themselves, are unaware that this condition occurs in both sexes. The mean age of onset of male anorexia has been reported ranging from as young as 17 years in a British series by Crisp and Burns (47) to 24 years (38,60). Crisp found that the illness was present an average of three and one-half years and that most patients were mildly obese (127.3 percent of ideal body weight, IBW) prior to the onset of illness. Minimal weight dropped to 67.3 percent of IBW (60) during the acute phase of illness. Apparently contrasting socioeconomic groups of origin for male anorectics may represent specific populations, seen in various programs. Andersen and Mickalide (48) found a high socioeconomic group at Johns Hopkins, while Herzog (38) in Boston and Verdereycken and Van den Broucke (59) in Belgium found an even socioeconomic distribution.
