  • The Bible is the sacred text of the Amish people. The Amish interpret the Bible literally and directly in many cases which explains their lifestyle. In addition to the Bible there are unwritten rules on which the Amish people base their morals and way of life. The Ordung are the unwritten rules of the church and are not specified in writing, but are known and closely followed.
  • Cult or Sect:
  • Negative sentiments are typically implied when the concepts "cult" and "sect" are employed in popular discourse. Since the Religious Movements Homepage seeks to promote religious tolerance and appreciation of the positive benefits of pluralism and religious diversity in human cultures, we encourage the use of alternative concepts that do not carry implicit negative stereotypes. For a more detailed discussion of both scholarly and popular usage of the concepts "cult" and "sect," please visit our Conceptualizing "Cult" and "Sect" page, where you will find additional links to related issues.

    Who the Amish Are
The Amish come in a familiar role: the passive and peaceful objects of civil wrath. Neither wanderers nor gypsies, but seeking always to hold fast to the land, their history nevertheless reaches back from today in Washington, D.C., and Wisconsin through yesterdays of many migrations and ultimately to the Switzerland of 1525 where their ancestors sought a return to a Golden Age. These were the "Anabaptists" who attempted, not church reform, but restoration of a lost a primitive Christianity. To be "First Century Christians" demanded nonconformity to all things worldly and sinful and therefore both a life style of austerity and a separated community of peaceableness and mutual aid , the individual baptized only when adult undergoing a rebirth through Christ and the working of the Holy Spirit. See generally, F. Littell, Sectarian Protestantism and the Pursuit of Wisdom , Public Control of Nonpublic Schools (Erickson ed.) 61-82 (1969).

    Amish Religion
In the Amish society, living the way that God wants is their number one goal. The Amish people hold church services every other Sunday at a different house in their church district. A church district usually consists of twenty-five to thirty families and has normally one bishop, two preachers, and one deacon. The bishop is the spiritual head of the district. A church service is about three hours long. During the service, men sit in the front rows of benches, and women sit behind them. Each district has a set of benches that are hauled to designated areas for the next service. These benches have no backs to them. After the service, there is a meal and time for socializing.
Amish people are not members of the church at birth. The Amish believe that making the decision to belong to the church is each individuals choice. Usually the Amish, in their early twenties, make the decision to join. They must, however, do so before marriage. Eighty percent of Amish children grow up to join the church and choose to stay in the Amish community.
The Amish believe they are temporary visitors on earth, and their principle duty is to prepare for the next world. The Amish believe in eternal life, however, it may be spent in heaven or hell, depending on how a person leads their life on earth.

Amish Religion The Amish religion is more than a religion, it is part of a way of life supported by the community. But what is this religion? I have written previous articles on the origins of the Amish religion. But what about today? Can you believe that people today would allow themselves to be subjugated by their religon and their community? Yet the Amish do this everyday of their lives. I remember growing Catholic how I thought the RC church was so restrictive. We went to confession on Saturday, Mass and communion on Sunday. We couldn't eat meat on Friday in those days either, and during Lent there were other restrictions. On Holy Days we had to go to church, even if we had school or work to go to. Imagine my surprise to study about a religion known as the Amish which was yards more strict than the Catholic religion. I was in a sociology class at Long Island University when the instructor told us about the movement of the Holy Spirit through the Amish churches. It sounded like a neat religion though I didn't understand all the dos and don'ts. I mean, women have a lot more don'ts than men. It is a patriachal society. That means the men are the bosses, and even above the men are the Bishops and Deacons of the church. They make the rules and the community must abide by them.

All major religions approve of organ and tissue donation.
Hundreds of area congregations celebrate National Donor Sabbath regularly.

  • Organ and tissue donation is viewed as an act of neighborly love and charity by these denominations. They encourage all members to support donation as a way of helping others. Amish The Amish will consent to transplantation if they know that it is for the health and welfare of the transplant recipient. They would be reluctant to donate their organs if the transplant outcome was known to be questionable. John Hostetler, an authority on Amish religion, says in his book Amish Society, that "the Amish believe that since God created the human body, it is God who heals; however, nothing in the Amish understanding of the Bible forbids them from using modern medical services including surgery, anesthesia, hospitalization, dental work, blood transfusions and immunization." Assembly of God The Church has no official policy regarding donation and leaves the decision to donate up to the individual. Organ and tissue donation is highly supported by the denomination.

The parents refused to comply by removing their children from school after they completed the eighth grade and continued their education at home, emphasizing domestic and farming skills. Further education would present their children with too much exposure to the "evil world." The families claimed that their rights to freely exercising their religion were not being respected. The Wisconsin Supreme Court found in favor of the Amish parents.
