Murkowski today appointed seven new members to the Alaska State Board of Education and Early Development, including retiring Education Commissioner Shirley J. Holloway. The other members named were Anchorage resident Esther J. Cox, Juneau resident Patsy DeWitt, Delta Junction resident Richard Mauer, Soldotna resident Sylvia J. Reynolds, Point Hope resident Rex Rock and Anchorage resident Tim Scott. Superintendent's Report: Superintendent Arnhart reported on the first semester's accomplishments throughout the District. Hopson Middle School won the highest attendance award for November with a 90.18% attendance rate. The students chose pizza for their reward and the pizza party will occur on December 19.

Press Release Fairbanks Music Teacher Named 2003 Alaska Teacher of the Year Alaska's 2003 Teacher of the Year is Alicia Lewis, a music teacher at Lathrop High School in the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District. "Alicia represents the best qualities of Alaska's teachers and is going to be an outstanding Teacher of the Year," Holloway said. "She does a marvelous, creative job with our children in her music classes. Her outstanding reputation among students, fellow educators and parents shows she has the qualities and abilities to represent teachers who are working hard in their classrooms all over the state to better the lives of children." Kathryn Berkowitz, a high school English teacher at Bartlett High School in Anchorage, with 18 years of teaching experience, was appointed 2003 Alternate Alaska Teacher of the Year. Lewis earned bachelor and master of music degrees in 1988 and 1990 from the University of Michigan. She completed coursework leading to teaching credentials at Wright State University and has taken additional coursework at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. She taught K-12 music at Tikigaq School in Point Hope in the North Slope Borough School District from 1995 to 1997 and music and reading at Hunter Elementary School in Fairbanks from 1997 to 2002 before moving to Lathrop High this year. From 1990 to 1993 she was artist-in-residence with the Michigan Opera Theater, and from 1990 to 1993 was private voice adjunct staff at Marygrove College in Detroit.
