    Official Alabama Outdoor Drama
    The Miracle Worker
In 1962, the first production of William Gibson's drama, The Miracle Worker , was performed on the grounds of Ivy Green. Ivy Green was the birthplace of Helen Keller. The house is listed on the national register of historic places. Visitors gather in Tuscumbia each June for the annual, week-long Helen Keller Festival. The celebration includes a parade through downtown, stage entertainment, arts and crafts, an art auction, tour of historic sites, puppet shows, a variety of sports tournaments, and athletic events. The festival also marks the beginning of the outdoor performances of William Gibson's The Miracle Worker . The play is performed each summer from the end of June through July on Friday and Saturday nights at 8:00 p.m. on the Ivy Green grounds. The play relates the story of "America's First Lady of Courage" and the miracle which enabled the deaf, blind child to communicate through the sense of touch. Located on a 640 acre tract in historic Tuscumbia, Ivy Green was built in 1820 by David Keller, grandfather of Helen Keller. The main house is of Virginia cottage construction, with four large rooms on the first floor bisected by a wide hall. Each room boasts an individual fireplace. Upstairs are three rooms connected by a hall. The birthplace cottage is situated east of the main house and consists of a large room and play room. The home and museum rooms are decorated with much of the original furniture of the Keller family. The actual well-pump where Helen's spirit was set free remains in the back yard.

Alabama Archaeological Society Site Stewardship Program
Since December, 1996, the Alabama Archaeological Society has had in place a site Stewardship Program directed by the Archaeological Resources Committee. Committee Chairman GIS Enhances Alabama Site File
Maintained by archaeologists and researchers at the University of Alabama since 1931, the Alabama State Site File currently contains records for almost 20,000 archaeological sites. These records provide concise information about the function, cultural affiliation, location, and natural setting of prehistoric and historic sites. The Site File began as hard copy record forms and a series of maps for plotting site locations. It has evolved through the years into a digital database, allowing researchers to query the data for archaeological information in ways inconceivable only a few decades ago. The most recent technological advancement of the Site File has been the integration of the database into a geographic information system (GIS).
    OAS
Through sponsorship of the Office of Archaeological Services (OAS), University of Alabama Museums, senior citizens are serving as crucial volunteers in an active Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). Operating out of the Huntsville-Madison Count Senior Center, the seniors work on archaeological collections stored at the Erskine Ramsay Archaeological Repository in Moundville. RSVP provides a valuable means to organize and inventory the many archaeological collections that lack funds. Charles Hubbert, OAS Staff Archaeologist, supervises and inspires the volunteer group through daily instruction and leadership. Hubbert provides background and history of the sites and the people who inhabited these sites prehistorically. Included in the program are slide presentations on archaeological topics and field trips.
