Parent Centers train and inform parents and professionals, help families obtain appropriate education and services for their children with disabilities, work to improve educational results for all children, resolve problems between families and schools or other agencies and connect children with disabilities to community resources that address their needs. Parent centers are funded by the U.S. Department of Education under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Each state has at least one parent center, and states with large populations may have more. There are approximately 100 parent centers in the U.S. Topical Areas IDEA 97, Rights and Responsibilities, Procedural Safeguards, Early Childhood, Transition (these are just a few of the topics covered by parent centers)..

Alabama does not recognize homeschooling as a separate legal option. Homeschoolers in Alabama must educate their children according to the provisions set forth in this legislation and therefore, most find "covering" or "umbrella" schools which will oversee their homeschooling programs and answer to the state. Parents with a teaching credentials may qualify as tutors for their own children. Rural or working children may also have an advantage. Compulsory attendance - Between 7 and 16 years of age.

    ASHA's new Hip on Health series is now available.
    What is Hip on Health Mini Posters and Parent Information Sheets Series? Each mini-poster and its accompanying parent information sheet addresses a single idea or recommendation related to the health, safety and well-being of children =96 particularly young children. Mini-posters provide accurate, useful information in 10 short sentences or less. Parent information sheets provide in-depth information and describe ways to ensure their child's health and safety. The cartoon strip on each sheet and poster also helps to educates parents in a humorous way.
    Each Hip on Health set, which provides information in several areas of comprehensive school health education, includes 15 parent information sheets and 15 mini-posters examining 15 different topics. The reproducible white master copies can be duplicated and distributed as often as you wish.
    Some Suggested Uses for the Hip on Health Series:
    *Teachers in Head Start, preschool, elementary schools and daycare programs can print the mini-posters on brightly colored paper and post where parents are likely to see them. Parent information sheets also can be duplicated and sent home.
    *Mini-posters can be displayed in examination or waiting rooms of children's hospitals, health, dental and other clinics and community service offices.
