SOAS Guide to Asian and African Languages
The School of Oriental and African Studies , University of London, has long been known for the study and teaching of languages. This guide introduces you to thirty-three languages that we teach to university students, and to people from other walks of life, who have an interest in Asia or Africa. SOAS Language Centre provides tuition in these and other Asian and African languages, such as Igbo, Mongolian, Kurdish and others, to meet the needs of people with particular requirements, whether in business, government, industry, or who wish to study out of personal interest. On the 1st August 2002 the School was restructured academically into three faculties - Arts and Humanities, Languages and Cultures and Law and Social Sciences. The new faculties have been created from the School's fifteen academic departments and academic centres.

Appreciating African Languages Just like there are many languages spoken in the United States, many languages and dialects are spoken in Africa. There are over 1,000 languages spoken in Africa! Some are linked to the earliest communications between humans, while others remain as evidence of conquerors of the past who forced their cultures and languages on Africa. English French, Portugese, and Arabic are official languages of many of the countries in Africa. It's many languages testify to the vast diversity of the African people. Here is "hello" in five different languages spoken in Africa: Tswana - Dumela (doo MAY lah) Tsotsi Talk - Hey-tah (HAY tah) French - Bonjour (bohn ZHOOR) Swahili - Jambo (JAHM boh) Arabic - Marhaba (MAHR hah bah) Resources: http://www.AfricaOnline.com/AfricaOnline/kidsonly/languages/index.html

Although the teaching of African languages at the elementary and secondary levels is rare, a number of schools offer one or more of the following major African languages at these levels: Arabic (North Africa), Hausa (West Africa), Swahili (East Africa), Wolof (Senegal), Yoruba (Nigeria), and Xhosa and Zulu (South Africa). Strictly speaking, Arabic is a colonial language brought to North Africa by Arabs from the Arabian peninsula. Through the spread of Islam and the introduction of Quranic schools, Arabic has flourished in Africa. U.S. universities and government agencies classify Arabic as both an African and a Middle Eastern language.
    Heritage Language
American children whose ancestors spoke an African language often seek to study it. These students include both recent immigrants and African Americans whose ancestors were slaves. The latter often have limited knowledge of their language heritage, because slavery discouraged the retention of language and cultural identity. Given this loss, many African-American students choose to study one of the more prominent African languages, such as Hausa, Swahili, Yoruba, or Zulu. Recently, African Americans who promote an Afrocentric curriculum have included the instruction of African languages and their related cultures. In support of an Afrocentric approach to education, new African immigrants frequently teach at places such as The Swahili Institute (Chicago).

African Languages
Supported in part by the Center for African Studies, the Department of Linguistics regularly offers first and second year classes in the Swahili language taught by Sam Mchombo and assistants. In addition, subject to funding, courses and tutorials on other African languages are set up especially for graduate students from throughout the University to acquire the necessary language proficiency to conduct research in Africa. In the past, languages that have been taught in this way include Amharic, Chichewa, Hausa, Igbo, Malagasy, Mandinka, Tigrinya, Wolof, Serer, Yoruba, and Zulu. Graduate students may apply for Foreign Language Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships to study an African language, when appropriate. Since 1988, the department has had two faculty members (Larry M. Hyman, and Sam Mchombo) with a third (Ian Maddieson) joining us in 2001, who direct projects dealing with aspects of the phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics of African languages.

The Undergraduate Minor in African Studies is designed primarily for (1) students who plan to live and work in Africa or who are interested in government and public service careers involving African affairs and/or (2) students who plan to pursue graduate work in one of the social sciences, or in Eastern and African Languages, with a primary concentration in the field of African Studies. The philosophy of the Minor is that people with a solid background in one of the established disciplines can make the best contribution to an understanding of Africa and its problems. The Minor is available to students working towards a Bachelor's Degree, normally in one of the following fields: Anthropology, Economics, Geography, History, Linguistics, Political Science, or Sociology. Students completing this special program will receive a B.A. degree combining a major in a selected discipline with a specialization in African Studies. The Chair of the Committee in charge certifies completion of the program.
To enter the minor, students must have an overall grade-point average of 2.0 or better and have completed 45 units and a three-term sequence of an African language prior to or concurrent with coursework in the minor. Languages may include Hausa, Swahili, Wolof, Zulu, and Afrikaans or, by petition to the minor counselor, another African language. Students must file a petition and meet with the student affairs counselor, African Studies Center, 10373 Bunche Hall.
